And there you have your problem, in a nut-shell.
Voinovich has been in the "politics" business for 40 years. It is all he knows. He has no clue about the real World. He is a product of his environnment.
Voinovich is relying on people he trusts to tell him what is in the bill and whether or not it is a good bill. He has not read the bill himself, is not terribly familiar with the contents, and does not even know which amendments have passed or failed. And yet he supports it because somebody who’s opinion he values has told him to support it.
Who is that person? How did he convince Voinovich that this bill is a good idea? Why does the opinion of that person out-weigh the combined opinion of the thousands of people who have called his office to complain?
There should be no shame in Voinovich admitting, at this late date, that he is ignorant on the particulars of this bill, and asking for more time to debate it. The way to do that is to vote “NO” on cloture. Otherwise, his only option is to vote on the bill in ignorance.
At a basic level, the cloture vote is not really a vote to kill the bill. If the Senate was serious about doing it’s job, a cloture vote would only mean that debate would continue. But they are Senators, and their time is too damn important to spend debating bills when somebody they trust has already told them what to think about them. Perhaps if the Senators were serious about doing their jobs, a free-wheeling debate could lead to a better bill that would not be unacceptable to the vast majority of Americans.
But instead, they are concerned about getting this wrapped up so they can get home for their 4th of July vacation and their hamburgers and hotdogs on those backyard grills.
Well, divide the $2.5 Trillion by 100 Senators, and assuming each Senator has two Hamburgers, those Hamburgers are costing the American taxpayer $12.5 Billion each. I hope it is worth it, Senator Voinovich, because that is one expensive Hamburger.
That’s why we need term limits more than ever......
Ohio Residents, Remember this."
Thats only if you want to be a year late. Voinovich is back on the ballot in 2010.
And the 'cryin' Senator does this by NOT reading the bills and consulting KARNACK the magnificent!
What a putz!
why can’t these arrogant morons see that? They are sowing the seeds of a democrat majority for a generation and they don’t seem to care. Do they feel the illegals will vote R? Do they understand that if the crossover D vote and the more liberal Rs will just vote democrat if they wanted a democrat? This entire two years have been surreal. I just want to hit the reset button and start over in 2005.
I heard it too.
I left work eearly on my way to a dental appt.
I heard most of the interview.
Voinovich showed an amazing combination of arrogance, stupidity and defensiveness all in one.
That’s a rare feat feat a politican to be all three of those at once!
There was a time when the most commonly heard phrase in Ohio was "Dick Celeste before he dicks you". It was even printed on t-shirts.
What about Dagmar? She was in a whole new league of whack jobs!
About 10 years ago I heard about her going to a former priest and doing some kind of ritual in a canoe, deep in a jungle river where she was made the first ever female Catholic priest, but she wasn't supposed to tell anyone....absolutely coo-coo for cocoa puffs that woman.
And God willing, they will Senator. You aren't where you are to serve your best interests, but to serve the best interests of the people of Ohio. Or have the bundles of money from big business contributors who are thriving on cheap immigrant labor dimmed your memory of who you work for?
I’m worried that republicans like Voinovich are the reason that Ohio will carry Hillary to victory in 2008. If a state like Ohio can have Brown and Voinovich as Senators, God help us.
bump
LOL! Your’re right - I was being way too nice! Love your tagline!
Ahh,the good old days. When your political enemies and friends were clearly defined groups. Now it’s darn near impossible to tell the difference.
Believe it or not, that sense of arrogance is not restricted entirely to US Senators.
I took a large number of GOP state legislators to task last year over their votes to build a publicly-funded professional baseball stadium.
I was admittedly a little rough with them when I told them I wasn’t exactly sorry to see that they had been defeated. In that respect, I deserved some indignant responses.
But many of the responses were along the lines of “Yeah, we did it. My county doesn’t have to pay for it. Yours does” and “It’s easy to sit and criticize me. Why don’t you run for state representative sometime and put your actions where your mouth is?”
The latter came from the (now former) GOP Speaker of the state House of Reps.
Strange that he voted against cloture today...maybe he finally understood THAT bill?
The Conservative element of the U.S. is going to have to pound our Senators and Congressmen once the Fairness Doctrine issue is raised again, just like we did on the immigration issue.
If the Fairness Doctrine is instituted in this nation, the Conservatives of America can do nothing but hunker down, get comfortable and wait for Armageddon.
I have a ? for you...I think Bush would veto that, agree or not?
Oh, it will not happen under the Bush Presidency. It will come up as soon as the Dems (Hillary) take control of the White House and both houses of Congress after the ‘08 Elections. Count on it!!!
We’ve got to get someone like Fred Thompson, Duncan Hunter or Newt Gingrich elected Prez in ‘08. That’s the only thing that will stop it.
FDT is supposed to announce on July 4th...he’d win if he ran, Congress is way too close to call, I think it’ll split - GOP House, Democrat Senate - a guess.
And yeah, Hillary would trot out the “fairness Doctrine” if she mananged to win. The Democrats could cheat again.
