The South is a distinctive part of the country, but has become more like the rest of the country (particularly places like Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, Northern VA). The South has influenced the rest of the country as well. When I go to the Mid-West, I find the people there are more like Southerners than people from NE or NY.

Texas, now that is another place as well. Texas could easily be a country on its own. Its people still think passionately about being Texans.

I’d agree about northern va, but not the others. Just because Northerners come in doesn’t mean they make it more northern. If anything, a transplant often finds he has to watch what he says unless he offend someone.

What I am saying though is, there is a weaker sense of national unity down here than the rest of the country, and I think of any region in the country, we are most likely to break off if conditions favor such an outcome. Remember, alot of northern born merchants lived down here before the first war, and we still seceded, and while they had initially opposed it, once we had made our course of action clear, they were as loyal to the cause as everyone else. And I seriously doubt any Southern black is going to cede to a federal government it’s right of basic protection, it’s just not going to happen.
