Most U.S. adults favor a program allowing illegal immigrants to stay in this country if the immigrants have a job and pay their back taxes, but would not allow them to stay if they do not pay their back taxes, according to a new Harris Poll released Tuesday.
Over half (57 percent) of adults said they favored creating a program that would allow illegal immigrants already living in the United States for a number of years to stay in the country and apply for U.S. citizenship if they pay their back taxes.
There is also a divide among Hispanics, one of the groups most impacted by the current debate over illegal immigrants, Harris says. When given the program where illegal immigrants would pay back taxes, three-quarters (74 percent) of Hispanics would favor this program (compared to 53 percent of non-Hispanic Caucasians). But, looking at the program where no back taxes would be paid, Hispanics are evenly divided as 44 percent would favor such a program and 44 percent would oppose.
Partisan leanings also show a split. When back taxes are included, two-thirds of Democrats (65 percent) favor this program as do 56 percent of Independents.
Republicans are split straight down the middle as 49 percent favor it and 49 percent oppose it.
When back taxes are not included, Republicans are of like mind with over three-quarters (78 percent) opposing it. There is also consensus among Democrats as three in five (60 percent) oppose this no back tax program along with 63 percent of Independents.
The Harris Poll of 2,372 U.S. adults was conducted online June 5-11 by Harris Interactive of Rochester, N.Y.
Too bad "back taxes" have nothing to do with the Senate bill, except forgive them for the illegals.
One comment...Bravo Sierra.
If by that you meant its bullshit, I heartily agree.
Ditto
Their “back taxes” may be a taxpayer-funded gift known as the earned income tax credit.
Did the poll specify how the government would confirm that the illegal aliens had been paying taxes?
One can always count on the MSM being ignorant of what exactly the Constitution says about tax legislation, namely any such legislation must originate in the House.
Sometimes, I wonder why I bother with this, the Republican Party is filled with strangers, I can understand what Zell Miller was talking about now.
And what about paying past Social Security taxes? What about those guilty of identity theft!!??
Just say NO to Illegal Alien Amnesty!! Keep calling!! Its NOT OVER!!

Yeah, this Harris poll is all screwed-up...it’s “interactive”, it’s old news by poll standards, it doesn’t ask applicable questions, and it took almost a week to complete.
Your Rasmussen poll was the accurate one, the down-played one.
Yea they just have to fill out a piece of papers saying they owe no taxes, you know like the one they put their fake immigration card and fake social security number on. Did they lie then or are they lying now? Of course IRS will have thousands of Spanish speaking Agents to investigate and audit...ROFLMAO..the inmates are running the asylum...
Do the pollsters mention “Oh, btw, more than half dont even have high school degrees and will be getting more in Govt benefits than they pay in taxes.”?
Would htat not change the dynamic of the poll.

You shouldn't confuse the poor public with too many details when taking a poll!
Needs repeating loud and often.
