Elizabeth Edwards received thunderous applause during a speech in San Francisco as part of Sundays Gay Pride celebration.
Elizabeth Edwards, wife of 2008 presidential candidate former U.S. Sen. John Edwards, advocated her husbands democratic campaign and addressed issues pertaining to poverty, the U.S. involvement in the Iraq war and lesbian and gay rights, among other topics.
As members of the audience held up John Edwards campaign posters, Elizabeth Edwards conveyed her and her husbands beliefs regarding one of the most important issues to many San Franciscans: the rights of gay and lesbian American citizens.
Everyone should have the same rights and benefits, Elizabeth Edwards said. Same-sex couples should receive the same treatment (as straight couples).
On the subject of poverty in America, Elizabeth Edwards said that she believed Congress had masked the issue in unjustifiable silence. 37 million people (in America) live in poverty, and 15 million in deep poverty, she said.
Elizabeth Edwards, who has been fighting breast cancer since 2004, also declared that the countrys healthcare is in shambles.
In addition, Elizabeth Edwards said she and John Edwards both support stem cell research, deeming it an important part of the countrys progress toward curing many medical problems.
We need a government driven by science and compassion, not ideology, Elizabeth Edwards said. Its time to stand up. Its time to fight, she said at the end of her speech.
Elizabeth Edwards speech took place at the annual Alice B. Toklas Pride Breakfast, hosted by the Alice B. Toklas Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Democratic Club, at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel at 9 a.m.
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and California Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, were among the opening speakers at the event.
Referring to Saturday and Sundays Gay Pride celebration, Newsom shared his belief that the magic of San Francisco stems from the non-judgmental nature of the city.
Today is an affirmation of whats good, and whats right, Newsom said.
Clad in leather pants that he jokingly referred to at one point during his short speech, Leno used his time at the podium to thank the audience for their support.
I don’t know, but clearly someone got to the station.
Probably Lang and Westerhoff.
WHY???
I ASK ONCE AGAIN....WHY???
“Scott Wiener, Human Rights Campaign Board of Directors Member; San Francisco Democratic Party Chair*”
I wonder if Scott’s “partner” is named Dick? And do they share the same last name?
You shouldn’t even have to ask “why.” It SHOULD be obvious.
WHATEVER!!~~~~~~Read the rest of that thread and tell me all of it is perfectly okay. I do have a right to speak, I think!
Don’t worry....I forgot.....not right to express any political opinions? You won’t have to worry about me again!
Oh please...you read your post again and tell me that you think it was an appropriate statement.
I knew all along what you were saying...just wanted you to say it. I don’t think using cancer in that manner is correct and I have seen it used on many threads much worse than what I said. The reason I used the cancer, is because from day one the Edwards have used it. They called for that first GREAT,BIG NEWS CONFERENCE a while back to announce the unknown news. The news media went crazy for two days giving them all this publicity and they stepped out looking great on a bright sun=shiny day and told us the cancer was back and Elizabeth was doing great and feeling great and they were going to continue living in the same manner. And they have used it on numerous occasions. Cancer is ugly, cancer is mean, cancer doesn’t care who it strikes and it does terrible things to one’s body. I may very well have cancer before I leave this earth but I do not think it is good for them to use the cancer for their popularity and when they need some new light shown on them. I just do not like the Edwards family. Has nothing to do with the cancer. I hope and pray she will live a long and happy life. I do not wish death on anyone. I despised Bill Clinton but I prayed for him when he was under-going heart surgery and hoped he would recover well again. What do you think about people calling Edwards gay and all the comments about fudge and sausage, etc. So, I am not an uneducated person and I very seldom make a comment and I didn’t appreciate being called down by you. I noticed you didn’t have a profile page as I looked for it. Thats all I have to say. Hope I have satisfied you?
Just for your information, you will not meet a nicer person than me. I treat others as I want to be treated and am in church on a regular basis. Didn’t want you to think you were speaking to a person who doesn’t know right from wrong. I hope you feel better about my “improper comment”.
Was hot sausage served?
ok
You’ve shown your colors.
Red, White and Blue. Thanks!
As soon as you have sex with someone you are a couple?
Product placement.
I am as Red, White, and Blue as you are....LOL! In fact, I just bought a new flag for my flag pole as my older flag was getting tattered. And my son put it up for me Saturday and I placed my hand over my heart and said “One Nation Under God”. Hey, we may turn out to be more alike than different! Wanta make up? LOL! I still dislike the Edwards. Chris Matthews really sandbagged Ann Coulter yesterday....been reading that great thread today~~~~~~~
LOL
(Said in same accent as Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin)
I grew up in S.F. and when I visit family I can't wait to get out of the place. There is such a vibration of evil, I can't explain it. (Shudder)
Maybe God is waiting for the 10 righteous who must still live there to leave.
The reality is that queers will rabidly cheer and vote for anyone who is willing to say that they are normal and good. That, in and of itself, is frightening.
