my take on the glut:....it started in the late 60s because a student deferrment got you out of Viet Nam.

I know a couple of those. Law school also attracted too many guys then as well.

And making student loans easier to get for postgraduate work just compounds the problem.

Exactly!.....sounds like you remember those days as well...get married or go to grad school; either one got you out of the draft....the draft dodgers went on to become tenured PhDs and indoctrinate future generations in anti-Americanism.
your point about the ease of getting student loans is one of the sadder aspects of the PhD glut....several of my wife’s friends were so saddled with grad school debt that they were in their late 30s and had to postpone having kids, buying a house ect.ect....stuff that most of us do in our 20s.
