My point was criticizing the criticism by saying “Well, you buy our stuff” is idiotic.
All nations manufacture and produce goods...and sometimes find buyers to buy them. It’s not about the commerce, it’s about how the products are produced.
If I were in a position to respond, I would tell the Chicoms “You’re right, we’ll pass a law making it illegal to buy Chinese goods until you clean up your act”.

Yes, you have a point, it isn't the best answer. But then again, China is attacked unfairly (i.e., the per capita output of carbon emissions is rarely, if at all, taken into consideration when criticized). Is not the criticism just as illogical as the retort? So they had a knee jerk reaction to unfair criticism.
Criticism, as usual, came China's way FIRST.
