Townspeople have their say - So much outrageous behavior this year seems to get mixed reactions...

The ornate golden dome atop San Francisco's City Hall belies the three-ring circus atmosphere inside -- and politicians, advocates and everyday citizens alike are wondering when the scandals and uproars that have marked the past five months will finally come to an end.

Nobody seems to much care whether Mayor Gavin Newsom did cocaine, which he swore Wednesday he'd never done after Supervisor Chris Daly raised the allegation in the middle of a packed Board of Supervisors meeting the day before.

But people are tired of what they see as outrageous antics -- even for San Francisco -- that have pervaded city politics this year.

"We've kind of reached a new high," said Don Olson, a waiter having lunch and a glass of white wine at Temple Bar in the Tenderloin on Thursday. "In some ways it's an embarrassment, but it's also classic San Francisco. I'm from Minnesota, and my relatives read about this and say, 'Oh, you crazy people out there.' It's true."

“Jack Davis, the San Francisco political consultant who worked on Newsom’s 2003 campaign and more recently was looking for someone to challenge Newsom in November, said it takes a lot for San Francisco voters to care about what goes on in a politician’s personal life.

“His 1997 birthday bash, which involved a performance artist being sodomized by a bottle of Jack Daniel’s before a who’s-who of local elected officials, drew a series of front-page headlines, but had little impact on any careers.

“There was blood and urine and Jack Daniel’s up the keister,” Davis said Thursday. “If people don’t care about that, I don’t think what anybody puts in their nose really matters much at all.”

Coming out of San Francisco which is queer central, not surprising.
