WASHINGTON -- A Fort Worth congresswoman wants manufactured and mobile homes to come equipped with weather radios.
Congresswoman Kay Granger's proposal comes after this week's deaths of at least six people in flooding in North Texas.
The Fort Worth Republican is co-sponsoring legislation requiring that every manufactured home be supplied with a weather radio.
The radio would automatically carry emergency broadcasts of the National Weather Service.
The requirement would be part of the federal manufactured home construction and safety standards.
The bill is named after CJ Martin, a two-year-old boy killed in a 2005 tornado. His mother helped get a law passed in Indiana that requires weather radios be installed in new mobile and manufactured homes.
I’m disappointed to see it was an (R) proposing it.
Emotions getting in the way of common sense.
That’s getting a bit excessive.
Why not make a law that you cannot live in tornado alley if you cannot afford it.
You can buy one for 20 dollars. How much will it cost , with interest over the next 15 years? I’ve lived in mobile homes and always kept the tv on in bad weather.
I’m betting it would be like the smoke detectors in many homes. They exist but they don’t work due to missing or dead batteries.
I love the law. It fixes everything that isn't right with the world.
Will we now have to retro-fit all those FEMA trailers the Gubmint keeps giving out?

You'd think if you lived in a trailer in tornado alley that you would keep an eye on the weather this time of year.
Sadly, watching the news about the toddler swept away in the Texas flooding the other day I saw a woman screaming at the camera “Who’s going to be responsible for that baby?”.
I’m not totally cold hearted but she needed to understand that those sorts of things happen sometimes. Hopefully she has since come to her senses.

I think a transponder would make more sense. It would help locate the home once the tornado carries it away.
Or better yet, a Sirius satellite radio. That way you don’t lose the am/fm signal as you are blown from one zone into another.
Oh, that would have so many wonderful uses! I want a transmitter that plugs into my cigarette lighter!
How about no trailers in KS, OK, MO, IA, etc..

How about a system that calls you during a warning? Most are very careful during awake hours but sometimes these things pop up at night.
So what’s next? Will home builders in FL be required to install backup generators in every home? Will builders in CA be required to build big moats around each home to protect from wildfires? What about builders in ND – extra firewood and down comforters for everyone?
And what people who don’t live in mobile homes. If an F-5 hit you it doesn’t matter what type of house you live in.
If you live in Tornado Alley and don’t’ have sense to have a weather radio, who’s to say you have sense enough to use it?
