Transit Chief Apologizes to Kissing Girls Kicked Off Bus

PORTLAND, Ore. — A transit agency chief apologized Wednesday to two teenage girls who were kicked off a city bus for kissing each other.

The girls, both 14, said the driver called them "sickos" after a female passenger complained about their kiss. The driver then stopped the bus along the street and forced them off.

"Removing the girls from the bus was not consistent with our policy," said TriMet General Manager Fred Hansen. "I want to reiterate that we welcome all riders on our system."

The 64-year-old driver also violated company policy that requires operators to call for assistance before removing any minors, TriMet said in a statement.

The driver, an 11-veteran who was not identified, will be disciplined, TriMet officials said, though no details were released.

It was a misunderstanding. They only had one stick of gum and had to take turns.

The driver obviously didn't realize he was committing a "hate crime" against a politically-protected victim class. I guess we'll never see him again, as he'll be relocated to a "re-education camp for enlightenment."

If I had been on that bus, I would have just gotten off at the next stop.

Translation: decorum is no longer required on the bus. Students can behave however they please and there will be no discipline of any kind.

Teenagers will do anything for attention. You just know they were doing everything to gross out the other passengers. Of course, instead of the nasty little twits being in trouble, they can now brag on their myspace pages how they got the poor driver in hot water.

“I want to reiterate that we welcome all riders on our system.”

So, it will be OK now for budding beards to ride one another. Won’t that fall under some kind of public sex act law?

This doesn’t even get close to as bad as the two sisters and brother I saw grinding each others backsides, boy and girl, and girl and girl. Yes, they were very obviously sisters and brother, or at least the kind of inbred cousins that are much the same as siblings, and they sure looked like they were doing their part for the next generation.

Well, first of all these kinds of things have to be subject to due process, so that certain drivers don't act in subjective ways versus other drivers. Safety of passengers should be a prime consideration, so that threats and violence should be first priority. Any other kind of behavior should be according to what is legal and accepted (or not legal and not accepted on the street, by the authorities). And then it would also be subject to Tri-Met policy -- whatever they lay down for riders. These are all the considerations.

You just don't go kicking people off the bus without this kind of process being available to all passengers. So, it's not if sex will be allowed or not on the Tri-Met system, but rather what is allowed, what is the process for removal and so on.

This is not as cut and dried as you might think.

I ended up calling 911 while riding the MAX Red line (or maybe it was the Blue Line, can't remember) because a guy was threatening to beat up another person and I intervened and then he threatened me.

He told me what he was going to do to me, and I told him to bring it on and we'd have it out right there, if he wanted to.

While I was on 911, he was still threatening me, and the operator could hear it, and they called Tri-Met and had the train stopped while waiting for the police to arrive. They couldn't get there fast enough and the train moved to the next stop and waited, while the guy jumped the train. The police came up right when he jumped the train and they chased him for about a block, with me right behind them. They nabbed him and took him off to jail.

That's the sort of thing that Tri-Met should be more concerned about, rather than what this article was talking about.

When you ride "public transit" you encounter the "public" and in all its facets. To get off the bus at the next stop would be simply stupid. That was an absolutely nothing event -- and if you think it was, then perhaps you shouldn't be riding public transit.

It would appear that you're not a rider of public transit, or you would have -- long ago -- become aware of the large diversity of actions and attitudes and opinions and "life" on public transit.

I remember one time I was contemplating asking the guy, talking to an empty seat next to him, if he actually saw someone there. But, I thought the better of it and just kept quiet.

...even these two little sodomites.

Note, that according to the article, the driver did not respond to something he saw himself, but rather to a complaint by another rider. And that's the worst kind of situation to respond to, because in a public situation, there can be all sorts of reasons why another person complains about something -- and a lot of the time it has nothing to do with the truth of the matter.

We're talking about mass transit, which transport the public. And so, the law should be applied in "public" on mass transit, with Tri-Met, just as it is applied in public. The primary goal for Tri-Met should be safety of the passengers, and that in regards to violence. That's absolutely priority number one.

Anything else should be according to how the laws are in public and how the specific policies are from Tri-Met. Other than that, there is no more "decorum" than you're going to find in any public situation. To expect anything else, other than what you will find in public is foolish and a wasted exercise in aggravation -- nothing more.

I'd have mustered up a good case of flatulence and aimed it in their direction.

When we forget that our individual behavior has no public consequences, we need to be reminded. (I'm sorry, but your right to swing your fist ends long before where my nose begins.)
