WASHINGTON -- An armed security guard fired at least 10 shots at another guard during an argument outside a busy entrance to Walter Reed Army Medical Center early Wednesday, police said. No one was hurt.
"This was rush hour on a busy thoroughfare. There were cars and pedestrians in the line of fire," said police Cmdr. Hilton Burton. At least two parked cars across the street were hit.
The guard who was fired upon ran to a nearby house to call police. The other guard, Dwan Thigpen, 34, of Fort Washington, Md., was arrested and charged with assault with intent to murder. He was scheduled to appear in court Thursday, police said. Police and jail officials did not know whether Thigpen had an attorney.
A Walter Reed surveillance video of the shooting shows two civilians ducking to avoid the gunfire, Burton said. It also shows the two security guards arguing, and a third guard trying to break up the altercation.
"There is a brief struggle between the security guard and the suspect, where the third guard is apparently trying to stop the suspect from taking his gun out of his holster," Burton said.
The video then shows the first guard pulling out the gun, a 9 mm Beretta, and chasing and firing at the victim, and the victim running and trying to get out of the way, Burton said.
Police were still reviewing the video, and there were no immediate plans to release it.
The guards worked for Vance Federal Security Services, said Joe Gavaghan, a spokesman for the company, which contracts with Walter Reed. Vance is "cooperating with authorities investigating this incident," said Gavaghan, adding that the company could not provide additional details.
The hospital is the Army's premier center for treating injured soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Sorry mate. 2nd Amendment...he has a perfect right to carry firearms.
These guys should know not to bring the gang stuff to work. The other guard was probably wearing the shooter’s colors.
don’t bet on it. My brother was a firefighter for 10 years. One of the guys who worked with him was black. The black guy didn’t like taking orders from the LT (who my brother said was an a-hole to everybody) so he came in one day with a pipe, snuck behind the LT while he was at the computer and tried to bash the guys brains in. The LT saw the guy in his monitor and moved just in time to avoid the brunt of the blow.
What a stupid headline.
A Webb voter?
Ping.
I feel really safe with these guys guarding the perimeter!
I expect “Dwan” is a mis-spelling....the brother is from Port Washington....that’s in Prince Georges County, so the proper spelling would be D’wan....as in D’shawn, D’niesha, D’tanya ect.ect.
Irresponsible idiots.
Instant revocation of licenses, and jail time should be expected and swift.
There are some corrections to be made:
One guard fired 8 shots
The other guard fired 4 shots in self-defense.
So a total of 12 casing recovered, and not all from same shooter.
Yes, there are armed guards... it is a military installation, and there are quite a few vulnerable Soldiers inside that aren’t very high on some terrorists Christmas list.
What the hell kind of name is Dwan? I would be pi$$ed off too if my momma named me Dwan.
Sleeping with someone else’s woman’ll get you shot?
Just remember, in Hilary Nation, only trained professionals, including Dwan, will have access to firearms.
Now, don’t you feel safer?
Did he speak English you ask....my guess is that he be thinking he speaking English...
DWAN? heehee!
Hey, wasn't that the chick in King Kong?
Why does ANY civilian establishment need armed guards?
I must admit it does sound a bit odd, the thing about the military hospital.
