Say goodbye to Office 2003, Microsoft tells PC builders
The Register ^ | 06/19/07 | Gavin Clarke

Posted on 06/20/2007 6:30:02 PM PDT by Salo

Microsoft is making Office 2007 its default productivity suite for system builders, less than five months after the suite's full-scale launch.

Say Goodbye to Office 2003

Microsoft will stop supplying (http://blogs.msdn.com/mssmallbiz/archive/2007/06/18/3384613.aspx) OEM Microsoft Office 2003 from June 30, Microsoft exec Eric Ligman wrote yesterday on the company's blog for small businesses.

The declaration means that Microsoft partners without inventory of Office 2003 must ship Office 2007 from July onwards.

Microsoft is making a heavy push for Office 2007 and seems to be now using OEM partners in the vanguard for driving sales.

Previous editions of Office have sold relatively slowly during the last 10 years, with a sizeable percentage of the customer base clinging to increasingly out-dated editions. That's a problem for Microsoft, as it means a key product in its core business isn't growing as it should.

Office 2007 is relatively early in the Microsoft lifecycle, having officially launched in January following limited availability in November, while Office 2003 was launched in October 2003. The older product still enjoys mainstream product support (http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/) from Microsoft and partners, while also being well within its extended lifecycle support.

Customers on volume licensing agreements can still run Office 2003 by activating the downgrade rights in their contracts from Office 2007. OEM Microsoft Office does not have downgrade rights.

Microsoft is running a webcast (http://blogs.msdn.com/mssmallbiz/archive/2007/06/15/3316782.aspx) on June 21 to explain licensing options to resellers for Windows, Office and Server products. ®

unrelated claims.

Further proof you're a leftist isn't unrelated, it's right on the money LOL.

No it's Linux the communists have full and free access to, which you support. Anyone in China can download it, copy it, rename it, resell it, whatever they want to do with it, the government calls their free version they get from guys like you in North Carolina "Red Flag". You've already been corrected on this before, of course, but Linux pimps have a problem with the facts, especially those that tie it with leftists and communists.

For reference, that is NOT the official logo. It came from a wallaper site. It's on an equivalent level to this:

You just blew by the examples of your hypocrisy in supporting criminals and complaining about US laws to write that. Nice try at misdirection.

Office ‘97 does a great job

The earlier editions shipped with a very adequate photo editor, that Microsoft in its infinite wisdom scrapped around 2003, for a lame photo viewer.

My experimentation with computers required my calling MS for reauthorizations. Your call goes to India.

I have never had a problem with reauthor.

Forced obsolescence. Each new thing that you install makes old things obsolete. One after another. The software is buggy and full of security holes. If cars were made and sold this way we would never put up with it.

As perfectly expected from you, defending communists and attacking successful Americans. Funny you have to live here in the evil US, even funnier is your job is using Microsoft products LOL.

Bump. I hate the newer version of Word that came on my laptop. I have my husband put the old version on. Microsoft could care less about the customer and someday that’s going to hurt.

That’s right, unlike you, I never support leftist causes, which are obviously your purpose in life. Your posting history is perfect proof, full of attacks against conservatives, Republicans, Christians and others like myself, which continually fail. God and America are still here and not going anywhere, too bad for you LOL, you even have to work on Microsoft products all day just to feed yourself, must be a miserable life being stuck supporting an American product you despise.

Free software does not have a political philosophy. Some behind it might be leftists, as are many behind proprietary software (degree doesn't matter, they're just leftists). At least using free software doesn't actually fund any leftists or their causes, like Planned Parenthood and the United Nations Population Fund.

LOL, you even have to work on Microsoft products all day just to feed yourself, must be a miserable life being stuck supporting an American product you despise.

On this board I've said I like Microsoft's development tools for my personal development -- no "have to" there. I've also never said I despise Windows, but unlike you I recognize its many flaws. So that sentence is just full of lies, expected from you.

More laughable excuses for why you endlessly support the “father of free software”, now trying to claim his green party ties and countless visits to communist governments have nothing to do with politics.

As perfectly expected from you, defending communists and attacking successful Americans.

And you're still trying to distract from your lies, unsupported statements and hypocrisy. You're now up to the following on this thread alone:

"the FSF threaten them with a lawsuit and damages of up to $150K per copy" No proof, only mentions of the general statutory maximum penalties.

"the leftists behind linux can and do [take your code] all the time" Outright lie. They can only make giving the code a less expensive option for those guilty of infringement.

"I don't give anyone a free pass" You still have not shown criticism of FreeBSD on the subject of access, despite its even more lax license.

"Thanks, everyone in the IT field has to use some free software these days" You make it sound like you only do it when forced, but never explained why you're using Linux right now.

"Ridiculous, Linux privides free technology to communists not Apple." Outright lie. Apple distributes its BSD Darwin kernel and the Safari engine free, available to communists in the same way Linux is.

"Microsoft is on record saying they will license any patents they infringe on" I showed you them defending against many claims of infringement instead of licensing, and you have yet to show proof of this on-record statement.

"You’re the one that can’t stand the laws of this country" While you consistently attack our export control laws.

Plus numerous statements professing to be all about law and order while supporting criminal acts as long as they're against people you don't like.

Care to actually address those, or do we just leave them on record?

He has a lot to do with politics, but that has nothing to do with Linux, which is run by Linus Torvalds, a person who prefers to stay as far away from politics as possible. This is opposed to Bill Gates and his massive lobbying (ex: for unlimited H1B visas at the expense of American IT workers) and political contributions.

Obviously, despite your previous denials. He also holds the copyright on more Linux code than anyone else, by a significant margin. The last time you tried to deny it, your own link showed him with more than everyone else you mentioned combined LMAO.

I'm sure you'll try the same lie again now, always do, which is one of the reasons you're so entertaining, you keep spouting lies in defense of communists, while actually having to use Microsoft products to keep food on your table.

Get it right, the copyright on more tools that can show up in a Linux distribution (and not the Linux kernel itself) than any other single copyright holder, by program count, and not by size or importance. Most of these tools are small, obscure and go unused by 99% of users. Most are also usually not installed by default.

The last time you tried to deny it,

The last time this came up, you falsely claimed he held the copyright to most of Linux, and I corrected you.

“Just keep in mind a lot of this “free” software is backed by radical leftists, like “the father of free software” Richard Stallman, www.stallman.org.”

So what? If the software is free it’s not like you are providing “radical leftists” any funding.

I’ve got it exactly right, obviously. Stallman is a leftist kook, who owns more rights in Linux distros than anyone, who you endlessly support with lies and circle talk, this thread is just another example. All you have on me is I don’t support leftists, under any circumstance, which throws your liberal mind into a tizzy. Too bad, FYI God is real too, and you have to make your living using evil American software LOL. No wonder you’re so miserable.

You’re providing them with support, whose “ultimate goal” is to have no restrictions on export control of software technology, and put all US software companies out of business eventually replacing them with a “software tax” on everyone to pay for this “free software.” It’s all outlined in the “GNU Manifesto” put out by “the father of free software” Richard Stallman, a green party leftist that has helped switch every communist government over to it already. Hugo Chavez re-affirmed his committment last week, and why wouldn’t he since he gets free software and we get nothing but our economy and security damaged.

If you don’t give them any money, you aren’t supporting them. Look, this free software will never supplant all or even a large part the commercial software out there. It just won’t happen and you know it. What it does do though is provide people with a choice. Microsoft is a heavy handed monopoly. They want to crush all their competition and force you to pay way too much for their crappy products that they will force into obsolescence so that you have to buy even more of their crap. Their bloated products are too expensive, but the only other commercial choice we really have is Apple, and they’re even more expensive. Linux is good for folks who can’t afford these other expensive products. Not only that, but the fact that Linux and other free products do exist has to keep Microsoft on their toes a little. They can’t make their products too much more expensive than they are or people will finally abandon them in favor of the free stuff, and when new and innovative products come out for Linux, Microsoft as usual will come in and steal those new ideas and incorporate them in their own software, making it better hopefully. I don’t use Linux, but I’m glad Linux exists. Competition is a good thing.
