All my personally owned windows boxes are Windows 2000. It has provided a good platform. I recently downloaded the CTP of Visual Studio with .Net 3.0 (Orcas). It can't be installed on Windows 2000. The target must be XP SP2 or better. The new WCF and WPF API will supplant the old standard win32 API. I need to get up to speed on the new API so my skills aren't rendered obsolete by the march of technology. That means wiping out a Windows 2000 machine and pressing forward to Vista to make a leap into the present. Too bad. I wasn't anxious to take that step. Failure to do so means my skills become obsolete too. That's not acceptable. I hope Vista is good for at least another 10 years (at least the new API element).

Leftist? Yeah, but Richard Stallman et. al. produced the best programming editor in the world: Emacs.

“Just keep in mind a lot of this “free” software is backed by radical leftists”

Radical leftists and F500 corps both present a threat to a free America.

Whose imposing political correctness on the average Joe?

Big corporations.

Let’s use the product of the leftist to further our own agenda.

Open office is useless crap.

It is free and you definately get what you pay for.

Open source software is a joke.

Just keep in mind a lot of this “free” software is backed by radical leftists, like “the father of free software” Richard Stallman, www.stallman.org.

Yah, thought about all that stuff before installing Linux, but so far no compulsory popup ads featuring an all expenses paid trip to the Gulag came up to click on, so I suppose Ubuntu is still safe after only two days of using it ..........

Thanks for the link. I have Office '03 and was about to switch to 2007, until I did some research.

No way I'm spending $400.

Can you give me any evidence at all that you have to buy a new copy to reinstall Office?

The worst thing that you would have to do is call for reauthorization.

Thankfully all of us aren't that easily bribed.

Yeah, I’ve played with Ubuntu

I couldn't believe how easy everything was to set up ... Ubuntu installed flawlessly, recognized and configured (most) of the hardware, has plug-n-play capability, and installing software apps not within the original .iso file was a snap to download and install. The only difficulty was inputting the WEP code to get my wireless network going, it didn't work at first .. so a little bit of internet research showed that it needed to have the word 'reserved' typed just before the WEP code. Kinda strange and arcane, but it worked like a charm after that .... been using Ubuntu on WiFi ever since, and doing so right now :)

I’m working on getting used to the differences in Office 2007 (home ‘puter). I’m still not sure where to find all of the editing stuff!!!

It looks good, though!

Some people just have too much money, apparently, and are in a hurry to give it to Microsoft.

OpenOffice.org works fine for me.
