Despite a few typos in the book it's really a great deal of fun. I think you and your nephews will be really pleased to have a copy.
Yeah, when I was in grad school I did a little research into so-called "conduct books" for girls from the late 19th century. They were really quite popular at the time -- and surprisingly informative and sensitive. Today, boys are the ones who are most under pressure -- they're the ones who need books to tell them it's okay to be a male.
It’s a great book!
Anyone who is old enough to remember Boy Scout Handbooks from the ‘50s and earlier will recognize the stuff in this book.
I especially like the fact that they included stories about courageous men (explorers, etc.), something many schools no longer teach because it’s so un-PC.
The book also includes the Declaration of Independence and the Ten Commandments, which probably ticks off liberals much more than the “For Boys” in the title.
And at Borders, it’s 30% off list price!
I meant to say that I’m confident your “grandsons” will enjoy the book — the book has got a lot of good information.
For most of the chemistry stuff, they would now get arrested if they went in their local drugstore and asked for the wherewithal.
Tricking the cat into the bathtub and then turning on the water. Total fun!
Shampooing the cat. Using car wash liquid.
I skimmed the book the past weekend at Barnes & Noble -- felt like I was looking at my old Cub Scout books from back in the early 60s. The book does appear to be a throwback to acknowledge the basic nature of boys which is a good thing in my estimation.
Ahhhh, the good old days! I have four brothers and a sister. We all played outside ALL the time, climbing trees, making forts, making HUGE sand creations in our giant sand box. Played with Barbie’s (took their heads off and made them “ghosts”) and GI Joe’s, rode bikes into a wooded lot, invented games and on and on.
Last summer, I taught my son how to climb a tree and he LOVED it. We bought this book for him this past weekend, should be a blast.
I highly recommend this book, I bought it recently and it is a great read.
Oh, what irony...
TBH, I wasn’t in Girl Scouts for long enough to give them a fair shake, but I was left wanting by (for example) the one camping trip we did. We spread out our sleeping bags on the concrete floor of an enclosed building with its own heavy duty kitchen. Somehow that wasn’t the camping experience I envisioned, LOL!
These days I don’t care to go camping without a generator/power hookup and air conditioning *grin* and screens to keep out the bugs - and I’m fine with that.
I’m blessed with a patient father who indulged his little girl’s “helping” him as he worked in his shop at home. And I’m darn glad I grew up without having to swaddle myself in helmet and kneepads just to skate or ride my bike.
Snips and snails and puppy dog tails...
Preach on, my sistuh!
I am the mother of a 7 yr old girl and a 4 yr old boy, and I’m just always amazed at how they are just hard wired differently. Newsflash: Boys and girls are different!
We are encouraging them in their little traditional gender roles because it is who they are, naturally. Feminism is dead in our house. We are working hard to raise a lady and a gentleman.
I thought the review was pretty even-handed. I guess my concern would be that the pendulum could swing too far back again. I’ll probably buy the book for my daughter and me.
A glass bottle with caterpillers and an M80 in them. In Miss Crabapple's garage. Never got caught.
There’s a book called “No More Christian Nice Guy” by Paul Coughlin. Elderidge tells you the what. Coughlin tells you the how.
Definitely worth your time!
I would write chapter 37 but unfortunately there is no statute of limitations...
You mean they don’t all normally try to follow you in and have a splash around when you get in to bathe yourself? /boggle
It take issue with the emotionally part. Oprah! and her viewers immediately come to mind.
