South Carolina Treasurer Thomas Ravenel has been suspended from office, following his indictment by a federal grand jury for distribution of cocaine.

could be....bizarre case in any event eh?
remember when Kenny Stabler sandbagged that nosy reporter by having coke planted in his spare tire back in the late 70s or early 80s in Foley Alabama down near the beach?
He is a conservative. Endorsed by the SC Club For Growth.
Correction:
Made a mistake..SC Club for Growth didn’t endorse him but he was a member of their board before he decided to run for treasurer
I'm not saying it's conspiracy, just that for him to be a full blown dealer just is so nuts for what I know about him. More info from The State story today:
"Ravenel, a Republican, was elected treasurer in November. The charge filed Tuesday said he has knowingly, intentionally and unlawfully possess(ed) with intent to distribute cocaine since at least late 2005. The case grew out of a Charleston Police Department investigation into narcotics, State Law Enforcement Division Chief Robert Stewart said. The Charleston police asked for SLEDs assistance in that investigation, Stewart said. Information was developed that state Treasurer Thomas Ravenel allegedly was involved in this illegal activity, Stewart said at a news conference. Stewart asked the FBI and U.S. attorney to join the investigation April 1, once the case involved a statewide elected official who administers the use of vast public funds. Lloyd described Miller as a drug dealer. He stressed Ravenel was not charged with selling cocaine. Under federal law, a charge of intent to distribute cocaine can mean a defendant acquired the drug and gave it to others. Lloyd would not say to whom Ravenel allegedly gave cocaine.
So it looks like Ravenal had a coke problem and gave some of his buddies some. That's way different from being a dealer.
Well there is a distinction else the law enforcement officer would not have said this "He stressed Ravenel was not charged with selling cocaine."
I wasn't living here then. Stabler did/does live in Gulf Shores. BTW, my older brother played one game against Stabler in HS.
er, yes. Interesting, isn't it?
I noticed that too...........
He’s a conservative. He even has an A rating from the SC NRA. He’s a rich guy with a drug problem and got busted. An old story, just with different players...
It clears the way for Greg Ryberg (who was beaten by Ravenel in a very close primary) to become the next governor of South Carolina. I am certain that Sanford will appoint him as interim treasurer, and the general assembly will appoint him as permanent treasurer, once Ravenel is convicted. I think both Ryberg and Ravenel wanted the state treasurer office to use as a stepping stone to the governor's race in 2010.
Ryberg is a good guy. Never thought of him..Guess there is a silver lining.
He is, indeed. Obviously I misjudged what Sanford would do. I just read that he appointed Columbia attorney Ken Wingate as interim Treasurer. I hope the general assembly picks Ryberg for the permanent post.
“500 grams to “share” with friends. Generous guy.”
I tiny pinch would be “less than 500 grams.” You should jump to the conclusion that he had 499.9 grams when it could have been a whole lot less than that.
DOC who is going to primary Grahmnesty?
No I don't. I've been there many times. One of my favorite cities.
That story makes sense. I was highly skeptical that he was actually a "dealer". And there is a difference between a full-blown dealer and someone who has a coke problem and gives some of his stash to his buddies. "Hi guys, enjoy this..."
