White House Budget Director Portman Resigns (House Majority Ldr Insults Replacement)
The Washington Post ^ | Tuesday, June 19, 2007 | Michael Abramowitz

White House budget director Rob Portman is stepping down and will be replaced by former Iowa Republican congressman Jim Nussle, senior administration officials said today. The president is scheduled to make the formal announcement at the Roosevelt Room later this afternoon.

Administration officials described the decision as motivated by Portman's desire to spend more time with his wife and three teen-aged children. Since returning to Washington as a congressman 14 years ago, Portman has been commuting weekly to his Cincinnati home, and his press secretary said he had tired of that.

Still, the news of Portman's departure seemed to surprise lawmakers on the Hill, where there is not nearly the same affection for his successor, Nussle, who ran an unsuccessful campaign for governor of Iowa last year. Nussle had previously served as chairman of the House Budget committee and has been seen as a hawk on spending issues.

House Majority leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) was notably cool in his comments about Nussle when asked about the new appointment this morning. "Rob Portman was one of the best members I have ever served with, a person of keen intellect and a responsible legislator," he said.

All he would say of the new OMB director is that "Mr. Nussle is a Dane." Both Hoyer and Nussle are of Danish ancestry. "You can read into that into what you want to read into it, and what you want to read into it is correct," he added.

Is there something bad about Danes that I don’t know?

Steny H. Hoyer (RAT, MD) is a real class act, isn’t he? Then, again, he IS a RAT.

Sounds like it’s time to pull out your trusty dirk and drain your veins of the offending shared substance.

Sounds to me like the same old sugary excuse we always get for "he got his butt canned".

I am beginning to think 4 years of being President is all anyone can take. Wide eyed optimism and passion can only carry you so far against a daily onslaught of personal attack and criticism.

Did he really say, “I’m out of here, there is no such thing as a budget in Washington, and wait until you see the impact of the Shamnesty bill!”?

Nussle morphed from paper-bag-headed outsider during the House Check scandal to pork-loving earmark god while head of the House Budget Committee. He’s your typical poisoned Washington insider. What a terrible choice.

With about 18 months to go, presidential appointments jump ship and new ones are added (at this point) more or less to pump up their resume and bloated government pensions.

In short: Nothing to look at folks. It's all over. Move along.....

Here are Nussle’s and Portman’s House of Representatives rankings for protecting taxpayers during the years that they served together, 1993 to 2004, per the National Taxpayers Union:

003 058 048 044 075 167 068 123 102 108 110 135 Nussle
019 037 049 021 116 027 034 109 057 072 141 112 Portman

Nussle averaged 87th among House members, Portman averaged 66th. Their rankings started out quite well, but worsened over time.

Nussle once was a spending hawk, but for 2005 his rank was 131 out of 228 Republicans and for 2006 it was 112 out of 227. In other words, today the guy is mediocre.
