Afraid of what?
Hanging out on the corner of Western and Armitage on a Saturday night is not my usual practice. But the birthday boy got to pick what he wanted for dinner, and he picked hot fudge sundaes at Margie's Candies. We had to wait for a table, and the place is tiny, so the waiting was done on the sidewalk outside. A lovely, warm June evening. Puerto Rican Festival -- obviously, based on the number of cars flying Puerto Rico's flag.
Sometimes the cars were honking or playing loud music. Sometimes the flag was waved through open sunroofs by excited young people.
This must be the horror the anti-immigration crowd is so worked up about. I narrowed my eyes and tried to understand what the fuss is about. Yes, there were a lot of Puerto Rican flags. But I have a hard time seeing their display as anti-American, particularly given that the Puerto Rican flag is red, white and blue -- a simplified U.S. flag, really, with the blue field made into a triangle, the sort of thing you might get if you gave the American flag to a boutique graphic design shop and asked them to modernize it for the 21st century.
Half of politics boils down to change. Some people believe they can block it and cling to the remembered Edens of their past. Others realize change is going to happen and embrace it, for good and ill. And why not? The United States is going to become a much more Hispanic country over the next 50 years, whether the current immigration bill passes or not. Whether you like it or not. It can happen easily, or it can happen hard, but it's going to happen.
Watching the neighborhood go by -- the flags, the couples dressed up fancy for dates -- was so pleasant it seemed only a moment before we were called into Margie's, where all races, ages and nationalities sit down for that great unifier, ice cream. I got my usual: The Jumbo Hot Fudge Atomic Sundae, with extra hot fudge. Is this a great country, or what?
Lets drop him off in Columbus on Cleveland Avenue and send him out on foot for some smokes.
Doubtless Steinberg lives in Lake Forest where his interactions with Mexicans consists only of watching them at a safe distance while they cut his lawn. It’s easy to be liberal at a distance.
According to Wikipedia: Steinberg is married and has two sons. He lives in Northbrook, Illinois.
Not much of a difference.
Yeah he can come down here to Atlanta and witness Buford Hwy (watch for crossing Mexicans with four kids) or Chamblee, which looks like Tijuana exploded.
GREAT POINT!!!
America is what she is because of the sacrifices made by 200 years of people who understood the mechanics of making and keeping a great company. The invasion of illegal immigrants, along with the children of those who’ve never had to sacrifice for America, are the kid who will get the inheritance. A press that knowingly publishes security secrets, a Congress that undercuts our fighting forces while they are on the field of conflict, a justice system that can no longer be trusted to protect the innocent and punish the guilty, the list goes on and on, are sure and certain indications that the inheritance is about to be pissed away by the spoiled child who inherited it.

What’s funny is that Steinberg either will not or can not make the distinction between legal citizens from PR and illegal Mexicans. Steinberg sounds like one of the dumbest SOBs you’d ever meet.
Dumb, or lying.
I guess he believes that all previous immigration bills that limit numbers are a waste of time and should be disregarded.
