At homeschooling conventions, walking in the crowd, you can spot the kids fresh out of public school or whose parents are only thinking of home schooling. You can spot them from a hundred feet away by their despondent ‘ew I am in public with my parents’ expression and their slouching ‘I am cool because I hate you all’ body language. Ok, not all of them were this way but the percentage was enough to bet plenty of money on.

I am actually proof of that. I was public schooled and hated, detested, despised, every derogatory term you can think of, being with my parents in public during my teenage years.

I have teenagers now, homeschooled, and we adore each other, seek out ways to spend time together. Completely different world.

Six years ago PA was considering making its homeschooling laws more family-friendly. We homeschoolers held a rally and went to the public hearing in Harrisburg.

About 2400 people were there with their kids of all ages - babies to teenagers. I can tell you, I have never seen an auditorium filled with that many kids who were using the “nothing happening” time so constructively - most were reading or writing - and all were well-dressed with none wearing baggy falling-down or butt-crack-exhibiting pants.

I was so proud of all those positive examples of the maturity that comes with positive parental attention and homeschooling.
