Broad Effort to Resurrect Immigration Bill
The New York Times ^ | June 16, 2007 | Robert Pear

Posted on 06/15/2007 8:22:46 PM PDT by Baladas

WASHINGTON, June 15 — At 4:30 p.m. on June 7, the Roman Catholic Church defied the sponsors of a comprehensive immigration bill and urged the Senate not to move toward final passage of the measure without significant changes.

A few hours later, after the Senate rejected his motion to end debate on the bill, the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada, pulled it from the Senate floor.

His action prompted advocates to rally behind the bill. Within 24 hours, the Catholic Church and many business, labor and Hispanic groups were urging the Senate to resurrect it.

They had all complained about various provisions of the measure. But when it appeared that the bill might be dying, they were flummoxed. Separately and together, they mobilized scores of lobbyists. They put pressure on the Senate and on Mr. Reid, in particular, to revive the bill.

“We were not happy with the bill,” said J. Kevin Appleby of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. “But we did not want it to die.”

In public, Mr. Reid and the White House blamed each other for the apparent demise of the legislation, while conservative politicians and talk radio hosts criticized it as “amnesty” for illegal immigrants.

But behind the scenes, Mr. Reid was inundated with telephone calls, letters, faxes and e-mail urging him to bring the bill back up. The pleas came from groups as diverse as the National Restaurant Association, the National Council of La Raza, the New England Apple Council and the business software company Oracle.

I watched as Reid quoted the Catholic Bishops before he pulled the bill, saying how they should be listened to. But I don’t recall him quoting the the Catholic Bishops when they were debating abortion.

If the Catholic church, or any church continue to stick their noses in politics, their tax exempt status should be yanked.

Or at least they should have a separate organization to deal with politics, and that organization should not be tax-exempt.

When you see the orgs. pushing for Kennedy\McCain\Bush or something even worse if possible, it makes a person wonder why it hasn’t been passed already. The country is full of crack whores including the Catholic Church that are pushing an agenda that may help some orgs. while hurting the United States and our citizens of which they could care less !!!

The illegals broke into our house and are now, with the help of Bush the Clown, stealing our future. I personally don’t want to compete with 200,000,000 low wage, Latino slaves. Elitist Bush will retire to his mansions while we are fighting against the illegal for scraps. The Bishop’s live in luxury in magnificent Chanceries. They will not have to compete for scraps with other peasants. They all sold us out to LaRaza and the multilateral traitorous corporations.

More importantly, he’s got the support of La Raza, Trent Lott, and Jorge W. Bush.

The only thing these guys are interested in are all those little white envelopes that the Catholic Mexicans will provide — otherwise you would not be hearing from them, just like on abortion....parasites.

I suppose anyone has a right to express their opinion, even a church. Not sure “crack whore” is accurate, unless you’re a member of the church. Then you might be better served going to your priest and expressing your views to him. That would probably be more productive.

On the other hand, if your government is calling you a racist or a bigot, I agree that they deserve to be called crack whores, and worse.

“More importantly, he’s got the support of La Raza, Trent Lott, and Jorge W. Bush.”

Bush praises the virtues of illegal immigrants, and trashes conservatives.

Twilight Zone 2 !!

They were against it before they were for it.

“We are tired of the politics, we’re tired of the excuses, and we’re not going away until Congress reforms the broken immigration system,” said Maureen J. Torrey, who grows vegetables and raises dairy cows in western New York.”

Maureen, I could care less about your business. That’s your problem. What I care about is the immense amount of money illegals are costing the taxpayers in medical and social services costs.

You don’t understand the Catholic Church,I do. I was Catholic and I get their agenda loud and clear and while “crack whore” may be insulting to it’s congregation in my opinion it apply’s as much to its hierarchy as it apply’s to the US Congress. It’s about politics not what’s right or wrong in both cases !!!

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is not the Catholic Church. If it was, I would no longer be Catholic. It is frustrating and embarrassing, however, when they make pronouncements about secular issues and put their ignorance on display.
