So Thompson Isn't Reagan After All?

That didn't take long. Apparently all one needs to do to earn the ire of your political allies is to place second in a few national polls. Indeed, after an initial wave of glowing reviews and softball interviews, Fred Thompson has been getting thumped a bit in the conservative chorus.

George Will, writing in Newsweek the other day, asked: "If he did not look like a basset hound who had just read a sad story - say, 'Old Yeller' - and if he did not talk like central casting's idea of the god Sincerity, would anyone think he ought to be entrusted with the nation's nuclear arsenal?"

A few weeks earlier, Robert Novak, another hard-hitting conservative, criticized Thompson's flat delivery at the Lincoln Club of Orange County - "a let down for the packed audience of conservative Republicans." And just last week, having spent a leisurely half-hour with Sean Hannity the night before, Thompson was absolutely grilled by Larry Kudlow on the host's CNBC show for the former Tennessee senator's opposition to tort reform.

Few conservatives have gone for the criticisms coming from the left - the lobbying career; the closeness to Washington's elite circles; the defense of Scooter Libby - except to note that Thompson doesn't, in fact, drive himself around Tennessee in a red pick-up truck. (The truly vicious have even gone after him for marrying a much younger woman.)

And it seems that anyone who comments on Thompson has to make an obligatory reference to his reputation for laziness on the job. Jay Leno, for instance, wouldn't have mentioned it to Thompson Tuesday night if the notion hadn't already become part of the collective wisdom.

Every interview that Fred has done is on the web. Either on youtube or Google video or the Fox News site. If Fred is in it, it’s online.

I am not casting any blame or trying to disparage anyone, lest of all Mr. Thompson. I did however tell you I would find it if I could. And I will. But I know what I heard, and so did hubby.

It’s not an accusation so don’t make it one. It is a point of interest which we intend to watch, that is all it is.

I’m just getting really tired of the new ‘Fred’s a globalist’, ‘Fred’s an extension of Bush’ junk that’s circulating around here, which is why when someone says something that I know is demonstrably false along those lines, I tend to do what I can to dispel the rumor.

Having been an observer of Fred Thompson’s for many years, I can tell you that if he wanted a one world government, he’d be out there making the case to all of us as to why it was a good idea. Fred doesn’t hide in the shadows. He’s very up front about what he believes and why. That’s one of the traits that makes him so perfect for our times.

Fred has also tried very hard to remain above the fray and not criticize his opponents too much, if at all.

Thanks, now that is helpful! And I mean that, no sarcasm intended. I am still looking, seems there is a never ending fountain of information. I will check with hubby too, and see if he remembers which interview it was. He may have meant it in a totally different context than what I heard it to be, I don’t know. But it is good to see a post that is from someone who has knowledge of Mr. Thompson, and states things like you just did, not attacks.
