WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush, trying to salvage an immigration overhaul legislation, endorsed a plan Thursday that would lock in money for border security as way to win over conservative lawmakers and a skeptical public.
``We're going to show the American people that the promises in this bill will be kept,'' Bush said in a speech to the Associated Builders and Contractors.
Bush got behind a proposal to set aside money collected through fees and penalties for tougher border security and workplace enforcement. Two Republican senators, John Kyl of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, have proposed such an amendment.
Bush said the measure would ``show the American people that we're going to do our jobs of securing this border once and for all.''
The provision would immediately divert $4.4 billion toward border security, with that amount to be paid back once new fees are in place. The point would be to ensure that border security would not be subject to the whims of the yearly budget negotiations.

They finally admitted it, this is a bill to raise revenue for the treasury.

That's obviously news to our pols...
Bush Pledges Tougher Border Security
yeah.. that’s the ticket. /me heads for the koolaid dispenser
Constitution? We don’t need nor obey no stinkin’ Constitution.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice.....
Yada Yada
AND that's EXACTLY WHY we DON'T WANT IT JORGE............
Uh, huh. “Read My Lips.....” Bull$hit, GW!
I don’t believe El Presidente.

The "set-aside" is a SPENDING bill. The "illegal immigrant amnesty" bill itself contains revenue-raising provisions--not this one.
“Bush said the measure would ``show the American people that we’re going to do our jobs of securing this border once and for all.”
Sounds fair, Mr. President.
Start fulfilling your constitutional duties, particularly, to defend us from foreign invasion by actually enforcing our immigration laws, and in a year or so we’ll talk about a “guest worker program”.
But lo siento, no promises . . .
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
I heard Tony Snow on Laura Ingrham’s show this morning. Laura pointed out that we the people don’t trust government anymore so Snow used Reagan’s “Trust but verify” line.
Basically he said we should allow them to do what they want and then we’ll have a chance to verify that they were telling the truth. The only problem is that once it’s done it’s done and if they’re lying (they are) there won’t be anything we can do about it.
Yah.
Prove it GW. Enforce current law and build the fence that is currently authorized by you.......
Fence, deport, jail employers and landlords of illegals.
Do all that and do it well and then I may have some confidence in your intentions Mr. President. Not before.
Oh, and the senate bill has to pass or the so called fees to pay for it will never be collected. What a crock, how about funding and building the fence and border security before any other bill is even considered?
I am starting to concur with others on this board that The President doesn't really care about Americans anymore. What American in their right mind would want to destroy their own people and take their country and party down in the process?
