Oops, correction. The label says “Manufactured for and unconditionally guaranteed by Unilever, Englewood Cliffs, NJ.” It gives the impression that it’s manufactured in New Jersey but does not state that as fact. So they could still be legally covered if the stuff was made in China. It’s still deceptive.
I think that if we realized how much of our food comes from China we’d be horrified.

China did kill my dog. Click on my name.
Thanks for the ping mom.
“This isn’t about your dog specifically, it’s about China peeing in the consumables they send over here.”
HA... when I was in grade school there was this joke that went around.. I can’t remember all of it, but the ending was basically “Me chinese, me play joke, me put pee-pee in your coke!”
I guess in retrospect, that was foreshadowing. :)
Hmm, interesting. At my school, we were just getting chocolate in our peanut butter, or peanut butter on our chocolate...
China killed my cat. He was inherited, but I loved him anyway.
OH GROSS! I’m checking the soy sauce right now!!
It is still deceptive and very careful phrasing. I don’t generally ask for more laws, but in this case it seems that people who sell foods containing foreign products should certainly have to warn consumers where those products come from. Yuck.
Actually I’m from India, and here, since last year, I started noticing Skippy jars with a China-origin label, instead of the usual ‘Made in the USA’ tag. Here in India, it is mandatory for all imported food to be labelled as to where their main ingredient origin is from.
Hi Carolyn,
“I only use the liquid makeup and blusher. But I wonder if they’re tested in the same way that eye makeup is?”
YES! Even everyday products like household ammonia, dish soap, etc. Any product that comes into contact with human skin. Don’t recall the title of that book. It describes bunny rabbits fastened down with shampoo, dish soap etc dripped into their eyes. Can you believe hair dye, too! That was too much for me.
On a side note, my husband was glad I stopped the make-up and hair dye. We have been married now for over 32 years, guess it wasn’t the ‘beauty products’ that kept him with me. :-)
Sorry to hear of your eye problems. I have the regular problems that come with age. Ugh! Grateful for each day of sight.
Cheers,
TL
Most major cosmetics companies are “cruelty free” now. One of the best, I think, is Arbonne. They also don’t put all of the fillers that the department store brands put in their products. There are plenty of good cosmetics companies out there...you just have to do a little research.
I hear that. Wasn't it Robert Browning that said "grow old along with me, the best is yet to be?" He was either very young when he wrote that, or he was nuts.
Carolyn
Makes sense to me. I am astounded that the US doesn’t have similar laws.
I know the stuff from "The Body Shop" is definitely cruelty free if that is your concern. My wife works there ... she loves the stuff.
I emailed Skippy asking for a definitive answer about where Skippy and its ingredients come from. I will post their reply when I get it.
There are cosmetic companies out there who don’t do animal testing. Many use organic ingredients too and are very safe. Burt’s Bees and Aveda come to mind, also Jurlique and Dr. Hauschka.
Carolyn
After reading your post I wanted to find out where my makeup is made. I use Bare Escentuals. I called them & they say they don’t know where its made. I am waiting for a call back which was supposed to have come a few hours ago telling me where its made. I surely don’t want it on my face if its from China.
