The only problem I can see is using a “child’s” social security number to open a line of credit. What a surprise it will be to children upon reaching their majority to find out they are already in bankruptcy. Now THAT would be a bummer. As to paying SS and taxes under the SS#, I can see where you might not care — it’s that credit background check you can’t get a job without that gives me pause.

That is a different issue and clearly would be theft. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that working on a stolen SS# is good, but it is not taking food out of anyones mouth and to try to portray it as such as in the title of the article is just disingenuous.
