President Bush visited with Senate Republicans behind closed doors yesterday, promising that he will follow through on border security, pleading with them to give his immigration plans a second look and trying to overcome hard feelings that arose from his recent charge that opponents are guilty of trying to "frighten people.". . .
One key question is how to go forward even though several amendments have already cut at the grand bargain -- including limiting the guest-worker program and making it easier to deport those who don't qualify for legalization -- and several other difficult amendments could pass before the bill is final.
Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott, Mississippi Republican, said those amendments will simply disappear when the House and Senate go to conference.
"No big deal -- you pitch those before you get to the Rotunda," he said.
But that is just what those who oppose the bill fear.
"I'm really disturbed Trent Lott would say: accept an amendment, he'll pitch it in conference," Mr. Sessions said. "Whose side is he on?"

Well, Lott’s unfortunate habit of thinking out loud has certainly served opponents of this bill very well. We all know now what he and his allies have in mind: No enforcement whatsoever, amnesty for all, huge numbers of “temporary” workers. Lott, if you are going to try to be dishonest, sneaky and underhanded, at least be smart enough to keep your mouth shut.
The longer they are in Washington, the more arrogant and out of touch they get. Time to clean house.
Mr President: How does rewarding 12 million people who have violated our immigration laws contribute to enforcement of those laws and our border. Is it not just an incentive for even more people to engage in such acts?
Actually, David Schippers did. I double checked his book to be certain of the quote.
Thanks though!
Now that representative democracy is effectively dead, personal democracy will eventually arise. Representative democracy fails when people elect senators and representatives who go to Washington and do their own personal business, ignoring their constituents completely. I don’t believe any of these clowns have thought of what they are bringing on our country by leaving us with no hope within the current system.
Here is a link to the page with Lott’s quote:

Trent Lott’s return to power is just proof the insider elitists are trying to take the republican party back to minority status.
One problem with Republicans is they are too often concerned with 'getting along' then they are in doing what is right.
The left already hates us, so why bother with trying to get along with them?
I have to agree with you.
Either he is really stupid (most likely) or he thinks WE are really stupid (that’s certain) or the third choice is he is a stupid retard who thinks he’s the smartest one of the dumbies.
In any case, he needs to go back to Mississip and tend to his truck patch. Full time.
Good Lord, they are so arrogant as to even tell us that they really are trying to fool us. This Senator Lott needs some FReeping. Is there one honest person inside the beltway? Heck with it, if the terrorists bomb
DC these a$$ clown open border idiots will reap what they sow.
Shameless liars.
Good God, she probably uses that as a front so that Lott can purchase his “at home wear” without public knowledge. Is that where he got his wig?
And while you are at it remember Ted Kennedy is 100% for passing this bill. So it’s suspect from the start.
Oh what a penetrating blow below the belt... but true, however!!!
Lott doesn't just serve greed and naked power, he is a pure expression of those things. This creature exemplifies much of what is wrong with our culture.
Actually, David Schippers did. I double checked his book to be certain of the quote.
You're both probably referring to another incident where Alaska Senator Ted Stevens told Henry Hyde in a meeting with the House Managers "Henry, I don't care if Bill Clinton raped and killed a nun on the steps of the Capitol, you're not going to get sixty votes."
Schippers' book Sellout should be required reading in every high school and college in America.
Why doesn’t Lott just go turn into a pillar of salt?
Unbelievable! Senator Lott needs to be retired, asap.
Before I posted, I looked it up in Schippers' book and confirmed the exact quote I posted (see pages 10-13).
You are right about the book though, it should be required reading. One of the most important facts that he stated was:
During the entire process he kept his doors open and extended several invitations to all members of Congress to view his evidence. Schippers was convinced that anyone who viewed the evidence, objectively, would vote in the affirmative to remove Clinton from office. Several Congressmen did so, and their minds were changed.
However, not one, not one single Democrat took him up on his offer. The Democrats had taken an oath, a sworn oath to perform one of the most solemn procedures allowed by the Constitution and they failed to perform their duty. They refused to look at the evidence.
That is one of several reasons why I will never vote for another Democrat.
