McCain taps state for funds as TV actor rival visits Stanford
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 6/12/7 | Carla Marinucci

U.S. Senator John McCain, pounded from the GOP right by conservatives on immigration and from moderates on his support for the president's Iraq policies, faces another challenge this week -- trying to scoop campaign cash from California's political ATM while being elbowed by a crowd of presidential hopefuls.

The presidential candidates who have been crisscrossing the Golden State this week include the Republican front-runner, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who just concluded a fundraising trip; former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who visits Southern California and San Francisco on Wednesday for fundraising; and a new and potentially formidable GOP challenger, TV actor and former senator Fred Thompson, who scouted the Hoover Institution at Stanford.

Thompson spent 2 1/2 hours Monday at the Palo Alto campus surrounded by at least two dozen leading scholars and experts on issues ranging from energy economy to health care and education. Some who attended the Hoover session said Thompson furiously took notes and asked thoughtful questions to examine the scholars' views of various challenges facing the next president before he formally opens his own presidential campaign.

But the Arizona senator, sitting in a hotel lobby in Santa Clara on Monday on a fast rest stop between a flight from San Jose and a drive to San Francisco for an evening fundraiser, insisted he is not worried about the entry of Thompson -- who once described McCain as the most qualified man to be president.

"He's a good friend of mine -- and he always will be,'' McCain said, who already has the support of some noted Hoover fellows, including former Secretary of State George Shultz. "I'll be running on my record.''

For decades, McCain said, "I've been in the arena in the Senate and responsible for resolving a number of issues with legislation."

OK I for one can't stand McCain, but that has to be the most idiotic line. I'm going to email Carla and ask her to name which "moderates" are upset about McCain's support for Iraq War policies. I want to know the name of just one.

Unfortunately, while that line is idiotic, the award for MOST idiotic has to go to the following quote from Mr. McNutbar:

“It makes it harder to reach compromise, which is the essence of leadership.”

Not “movie star,” but “TV actor.” The Chron is very worried. I wonder if they refer to Edwards as “ambulance chaser.”

8 years in the Senate (as much as Obama and Edwards put together)... Tennessee Attorney General... lead minority counsel in Watergate... TV actor...

Obama’s CV:

Attorney, 1993-1996
State legislator, 1998-2000, 2000-2004.
U.S. Senate, 2005-present, just two short years before declaring his presidential candidacy!

Edwards’ CV:

Personal-injury attorney, 1978-1996
U.S. Senate, 1997-2002.

Fred Thompson’s CV:

U.S. Attorney, 1967-1972
Chief minority council, U.S. Senate Watergate investigation, 1973-1974
Attorney General of Tennessee, mid ‘70s?
U.S. Senator, 1995-2002

That was the Examiner, which was resurrected a year or two ago by the guy that bankrolled the Narnia movies.

The b**ch tried to derail Schwarzenegger's campaign too by implying (falsely) that he advocated steroid use for bodybuilding.
