A sign that democracy works: Chambliss and Isakson were at the press conference announcing the Senate Grand Compromise, but now they are singing a different tune. Here's the entire release:
WASHINGTON U.S. Senators Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) and Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) today sent a letter to President Bush urging him to send an emergency supplemental spending bill to Congress to fund border security. Chambliss and Isakson believe emergency supplemental funds to secure the border will go a long way towards restoring the confidence of the American people in the federal governments commitment to border security.
The text of the letter is below:
Dear Mr. President:
Although the Senates effort to reform our nations immigration laws through the Secure Borders, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Reform Act of 2007 is stalled, illegal immigration remains our nations number one domestic issue. We therefore believe it is incumbent upon us and our colleagues to tackle this issue and not leave this problem for future generations to solve.
As we travel around Georgia and continue to hear from our constituents, the message from a majority of Georgians is that they have no trust that the United States Government will enforce the laws contained in this new legislation and secure the border first. This lack of trust is rooted in the mistakes made in 1986 and the continued chaos surrounding our immigration laws. Understandably, the lack of credibility the federal government has on this issue gives merit to the skepticism of many about future immigration reform.
We believe the way to build greater support for immigration reform in the United States Senate and among the American public is to regain the trust in the ability of the federal government to responsibly administer immigration programs and enforce immigration laws. There is bipartisan agreement that we need to secure our borders first, and we believe this approach will serve as a platform towards addressing the other issues surrounding immigration reform.
To that end, we believe that you and your administration could alleviate many of the fears of our constituents by calling for an emergency supplemental bill to fully fund the border and interior security initiatives contained in legislation currently pending in the Senate, as well as any outstanding existing authorizations. Such a move would show your commitment to securing the border first and to stopping the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into our nation. It will also work towards restoring the credibility of the federal government on this critical issue.
We urge you to carefully consider this request, and thank you for the opportunity to express the views of the people of Georgia on this matter.
I thought to no avail but now.....
Two down, several dozen more to go. I will believe this thing is dead when the South Carolina Weeping Pansy signs a similar letter.
Yes, as old Senator Everett Dirksen once declared. “WHEN THEY FEEL THE HEAT, THEY SEE THE LIGHT!”
Looks like Johnny and Saxby have had an electoral epiphany.
I won’t believe it until I see it.
They are all chronic liars.
Does sound like we are having some kind of impact though
I heard that Chambliss was on a local North Georgia radio show and was bombarded for an hour with the border security questions. The host, Martha Zoller, reported that her listeners wanted answers as to how the government could enforce new laws if they couldn’t enforce the laws currently on the books. She said Chambliss could not answer.
I’ll trust them to enforce the law when they actually enforce the law; set up funding, train agents, put them in the field, make arrests, find people guilty, and assess the penalties. Not until. And let’s make sure that we focus on the employers. Cut off the funding for the illegal aliens and they won’t come over.
I called both of my senators....My message to Mel Martinez...i won’t be voting for you again.
Voters enmasse speak and FINALLY politicians take note. Whew! Speak about hitting them over the head with a two-by-four....
KEEP THE THUMBSCREWS ON THESE CLOWNS
I wouldn't be too happy. There's nothing in this letter that refutes articles within the immigration bill. If emergency appropriations are enacted to secure the border, amnesty and other provisions could still be enacted.
The fight isn't over. Congress and the WH MUST be made to understand that we will NOT accept amnesty in any way, shape or form.
Hold your applause, the bastards are trying to make an end run, pre-funding this stinking fraud of a bill.
Reading this again, more carefully, I think it is lacking something. In addition to calling for an emergency supplemental with border enforcement money, they should also be demanding a demonstration that border enforcement AND interior enforcement are ACTUALLY WORKING.Congress can only appropriate for one year at a time. Come back after you have secured the border, shut down the hiring of illegals, picked up all the deportation absconders, cut off all benefits to illegals, punished the states that grant them drivers licenses and deported several million of them and MAYBE we’ll talk.
No, it will go a very short way. It is in the right direction, but it is only the first step. Build the fence and guard the border for a few years, then we can talk about comprehensive solutions and guest workers.
Yes, see post No. 15. But they did get their tails twisted during recess, didn’t they?
If this letter is true, it’s a step in the right direction.
Sure enough! And I think it's continuing. We can't afford to let up on these people. Any backing off will spell defeat for our cause.
Weeping pansy is not smart enough to read the writing on the wall. I only hope the voters of SC are smart enough to find a replacement for him next time he is up for election.
