Your comments are noted, the central fact is that the Federal government, under the Bush administration has shown little appetite to enforce the border. The signals are basically “come on in, the water’s fine.” The level of animosity generated by our corrupt border management, and the marching of illegals in our streets in a time of war, cannot be overstated. That Bush is so tone deaf to these concerns magnifys the frustration, which leads to anger.
In such a climate comprehensive reform is not possible. With an honest effort to crack down on employers, and enforce the border, some credibility could be gained. Imagine how different this debate would be if, after the months since last year’s immigration fiasco, the border guards had not been imprisoned for doing their jobs, and we had say one hundred miles of the fence built.
