(Juan) McCain's immigration pitch
The Sacramento Bee ^ | June 12, 2007 | Peter Hecht

Presidential candidate John McCain, skewered by some GOP conservatives as an advocate for "amnesty" for illegal immigrants, vowed Monday to resurrect a controversial immigration measure in hopes Congress can pass the bill by July 4.

In a campaign appearance in Sacramento, McCain said he is pushing for compromises on amendments to reach a resolution on the measure to improve border security and grant legal status to 12 million illegal immigrants.

In a major political setback to President Bush, the immigration measure stalled in the Senate last week after senators voted overwhelmingly against a motion to cut off debate and bring it to a vote. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid then pulled the bill.

The Arizona senator, in Sacramento for a fundraiser at the home of real estate developer Jack Sioukas, has been a principal proponent of the immigration bill -- drawing the ire of many in his own party.

The measure has drawn particular criticism from conservatives over provisions to allow current illegal immigrants to stay on -- legally -- in the United States. The bill would also create a temporary guest worker program, improve border security and crack down on employers hiring illegal workers.

On Monday, McCain said he is trying to sell the bill to fellow Republicans as a critical "national security" measure, pointing out that suspects recently arrested in an alleged plan to attack Fort Dix in New Jersey entered the country illegally.

"I think polls clearly show the majority of Americans and the majority of citizens in this really culturally diverse state support comprehensive immigration reform," McCain said in his Sacramento appearance. "It is clear to me that part of our Republican base feels intensely about this issue. It is my job to convince them ... we need to address this."

Hey, McCain! If you're concerned about "national security", close the Border! And forget about sales pitches!

The new calling plan, “Call All”

It is time to call beyond the published phone numbers. Example; 202-224-3121 is the published number for the Senate Switchboard. If you dial 202-224-2887 you get the Senate Commerce Committee answer line. 202-224-3445 end up with the Senate Building Health Unit The idea is to work through the last four digits in sequence who answers give them the message. Some of you geeks, I say that with admiration; can probably develop a list of all the combinations which will keep us busy from the calling end. Are you with me?

Didn't I read that 67% of US citizens said no.

Where does this elite POS get the idea that he can/will ram this down our throats?

We don't want an amnesty for illegal aliens, Senator!!

Sorry, 2nd Div., but no solution = de facto amnesty and continued illegal ingress.

If McKain and others can come up with a better plan, more power to them.
