Last night as watched the end of the final show, I said to myself: "This is lame." But as I began to think about it, I started realizing that the black out might be pure genius. Here is what I think happened: Tony whacked us, the audience. Here are the clues:
1. Throughout the series the question was asked, "What happens when you get whacked," and the answer was the same: you don't hear it or see it coming - everything just goes dark.
2. Tony learns that he is under indictment, which means he needs to get rid of the witnesses who can hurt him most - they are the viewers, who have been watching him week to week through the entire series. We know where all the bodies are buried.
3. The final diner scene is absolutely crucial to my theory. First, it is not Tony who is noticing all the potential killers coming in - it is us. Tony is completely relaxed for someone under a death sentence. In fact, he is very relaxed- he knows something.
When the man at the counter goes into the bathroom, we have noticed him from the time he has walked in, but Tony barely gives him a glance - the same glance you would give anyone who walks by you.
There are two final and significant clues to my solution. The first one is the final camera angle. All the angles before have been from outside the booth, but the final camera angle sits us right in front of Tony, looking at him face to face. Finally, Tony glances up, and this is the real key. We know that Meadow is coming in the door, but his look is not one of a father seeing his daughter walk in. Rather, it is a look of casual expection.
Except for the one in the bathroom, all of the potential hitmen are behind us. Tony knows what is coming, and his face reveals neither surprise, alarm, or fear. He knows what is coming because he ordered the hit on us. And we never see it coming. And we never hear it. Everything just goes dark, and we are dead.
That SOB whacked us.
If this is the case, then it is a brilliant ending. We are dead, but Tony and his two "families" are not, leaving the story open to all kind of future possibilities.
That's my theory - would love to hear yours.
Interestingly, ‘earthlights’ is my monitor background.
Did Savage say earlier that he believes WW3 may begin over Kosovo? I can just see it now Russia, Serbia, Greece vs. the US........ugh.
Savage going off on zero tolerance anti-science conservatives. I tell you, that crew makes us all look loopy.
