To: snowsislander; snugs
I got the croquettes photo from a site hosting food pictures, not from a restaurant site. I just checked around, but couldn't find it again (the original post was last summer). There's nothing like a nice warm croquette.

By the way, Snugs, the McDonald's apple pies in the U.S. are not fried, but the last time I was in London (2002) they were fried in the McDonald's on the Strand. YUM!! The baked American ones are almost 400 calories apiece, and they sell them two for a dollar, so I hesitate to think how many calories are in the UK fried version! Here's a photo of the fried ones:

I miss the old fried apple pies at Micky Dees. I LOVED them, and I think that I still have the scars in my mouth to prove it!

I'm pretty sure that the reason they abandoned the deep fried apple pies in the US was for liability reasons: I know that even though the packaging stated that the insides were hot, the deep fryer would heat the insides of those pies to "lava, boiling hot!" temperatures, and the fried crust made a terrific insulator. A half hour after sitting down you could still burn the heck out of the roof of your mouth.
