I’d like to understand Ron Paul’s votes against the bulk of legislation to protect children from pedophiles, pornographers, and other criminals. When I search the Washington Post archive for legislation, Ron Paul is often the only vote against such legislation. Why is that?

Because in many of the instances, the Constitution does not provide the power for the federal government to become involved. Dr. Paul has stated before there are bills he would like to vote for but he understands the Constitution does not give the federal government that power.

Ron Paul believes that violations of the Constitutional authority of the Federal Government is wrong even when the causes under which it might do so are just. He is a strict Constitutional originalist.

“If, in the opinion of the people, the distribution or modification of the constitutional powers be in any particular wrong, let it be corrected by an amendment in the way which the Constitution designates. But let there be no change by usurpation; for though this, in one instance, may be the instrument of good, it is the customary weapon by which free governments are destroyed.” —
George Washington, Farewell Address, 1796

Because he opposes any legislation that doesn't pass Constitutional muster or has bogus earmarks attached.

All laws have two uses. The one for which it is intended and one for which it is not. In other words, the Law of Unintended Consequences. It's the unintended consequences of bad law that are eroding our liberty.

A good example is the Port Security Bill. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Act was stealthily attached to the Port Security Bill. It is bad law that steals another liberty.

Ron Paul believes that that is not up to the federal government. It should be up to each individual state.

Up front, I am not necessarily a Ron Paul supporter, but maybe, just maybe, Mr. Paul is reading the Constitution and returning the power to make those laws back to the several States, where it is MOST appropriate.

Washington, FedGov, is NOT the answer to all our problems. Acting Local or Statewide is better, as the solutions can be tailored to the local needs.

So, perhaps, Mr. Paul IS against the pedophiles, et al, but believes that increasing FedGov’s powers isn’t the way to go. Just my .02
