QUEBEC (CP) - The Quebec government would like it in writing every time oil companies increase gasoline prices in the province.
Natural Resources Minister Claude Bechard said Friday the move to limit price fluctuations at the pump will protect consumers against what he calls "unjustified" hikes.
This comes just days after Quebec imposed a carbon tax on oil companies and other energy producers to finance its plan to reduce greenhouse gases. The carbon tax is believed to be the first of its kind in Canada.
Bechard said that oil companies will have to provide a written explanation to the provincial energy board for every price hike.
"Fixing the daily minimum price, on top of demanding oil companies to justify in writing all price increases, should in effect shelter Quebec taxpayers and consumers from what are at times unjustified increases," he said at a news conference.

So what’s the point...the Energy Board gonna say no to Exxon. Go away, we don’t want your price increase?
Love the circular logic of socialism.
And Canadians worry when Quebec wants to secessed?
HA!! Well, you see, demand is rising while supply is steady so the free market moved gas at a higher price. If I had to do this, I would hire Mark Steyn to write the explanations.
Maybe oil companies will need written permission in the future! May I please raise prices to cover my costs, if I do I promise I will reinvest my money to ethanol to make sure you guys still get the votes from farmers and greenos.
