Silver Lining in GOP's Dark Cloud
Real Clear Politics ^ | June 9, 2007 | Jack Kelly

President Bush has cast a huge, dark cloud over the Republican party. But in that cloud's very size there may be a silver lining for the GOP. Most of those Americans who don't think President Bush made a mistake by going to war in Iraq are appalled by how clumsily the war has been conducted.

The president's strong backing for the "comprehensive" immigration reform bill now before the Senate, compounded by his attack on the character and motives of those who oppose it have split the GOP. Thousands of Republicans have changed their voter registration to "independent." The proportion of voters who identify themselves as Republicans has fallen to 30.8 percent from 37.3 percent during the 2004 election campaign, according to a recent Rasmussen poll.

Sadly, I think you're right. To see Republicans tearing ourselves apart like this is very troublesome. We can only hope that is the most radical of this thinking that post here or we are through.

Last night at a Republican gathering, I stated that I was going to be voting for the Republican nominee, even if it's Rudy. I don't want him, I'm not supporting him in either the Straw Poll or the Caucus but by golly, if he's our nominee, I'm voting for him. When my choice is between Rudy or Hillary--no brainer--I'll take Rudy.

He actually thought he could be friends with the Dems and they would be friends back.

I have always wondered why many Republicans feel they can be friends with the DemocRats. Some Rats are anti American, and are enemies to me. I take this so seriously, I pride myself on not having any close friends who are Democrats. They may be aqaintances, but never friends. That is simply MHO, others conservatives may or may not agree.

Positions are not points on a spectrum. They are a range on the spectrum.

Specifically, I would bet solid money that President Bush would sign a bill that builds a fence, punishes employers of illegals, deports those captured, and DOES SO FOR 5 YEARS BEFORE ANY GUEST WORKER PROGRAM STARTS, with a Further Requirement that the Guest Worker program can’t start until illegal numbers in the US are cut by at least 50%, and if that 50% is achieved before 5 years, the guest worker program must still wait 5 years.

President Bush would sign a bill like that.

Would that make him evil? A bill like that would be solidly conservative.

Will a Democrat Congress provide him such a bill?

I for one helped in Bush’s 04 Campaign in the crucial state of OH!!

It was now a mistake, in hindsight I am not a 100%ER, BUT BUSH HAS TIME AFTER TIME Shown he is no (Conservative: and neither is the “elite” of our party). He’s no Ronald Reagan, Sir.

I’ve often wondered if Bush’s sucking up to people who despise him isn’t misconstrued Christianity. He needs to be reminded that Christ said, “love your enemies,” not “become like your enemies.”

I made a collection of some choice quotes of MNJohnnies from the last couple days... He appears to have some anger issues.

“IF at some point you finally evolve to the point you can form a coherent rational thought, try again. Until such time do not waste our time with your mindless whining and snarls.”

“Your knee jerk rabid stupidity impresses no one here.”

“You better pull your head out of you butt and face simple factual reality for once in your trailer trash life. Your knee jerk rabid stupidity impresses no one here.”

“No the rabid loser Bush haters who spent all their time doing nothing but screaming bile at the GOP, (i.e.YOU) because they were not getting only what they wanted the second they decided they wanted it did that.”

“The people paying the price for this media grandstanding from the Judge here are the guys that got to try an run that jail. Just so a bunch of pathetic losers can sit around read junk media reports and feel all good and macho for “getting even with that rich bi’ch”

” YOU, using your own emotion driven ego, do not get to define what is a violation of his oath. So spare us the arrogant pompous bluster.”

” Then you are politically ignorant child. You have neither the grounds nor votes. So shut up with the pathetically childish ranting.”

” Or you are just a rabid paranoid with delusions of competence. Maybe the “lemmings” know something quite a bit more about politics then you self styled “geniuses”.”

“Face it, you don’t want any solutions. You just want to be able to bitch”

You didn't listen to what I wrote or you will not allow facts to get in your way (or perhaps you're Karl Rove). Whatever, let me repeat: I have supported Dubya throughout all that I've enumerated in the previous post and have not complained--UNTIL NOW! If you supported Dubya, the Martha's Vineyard Orca and McCain on this immigration bill than you are also part of the problem.

"Why is it you and your buddies realize your bile and vitriol far exceed bush bashing, that it's tearing the GOP apart?"

So you think anyone who criticizes the President is Bush bashing? Pardon me for not realizing we had already given up free speech. I thought only part of it had been usurped.

"You're gonna get tax hikes on everything."

That's certainly true since the previous REPUBLICAN Congress was unable to make Bush's temporary tax cuts permanent. In fact, the REPUBLICANS were only able to pass them as temporary as all our RINOs fought the conservatives.

"You're gonna get socialized medicine."

Going to get that anyway since big business who controls the RINOs and some pseudo-conservatives wants to dump their costs on the taxpayer.

"You're gonna get firearms laws far worse than the assault weapons ban."

And you are gullible enough to believe that Rudy, Romney, or McCain won't do the same?

"You're gonna a couple of more Ruth Ginsburgs who will make decisions about God, guns, gays and every liberal issue that will haunt you for the rest of your life."

Let me guess...you believe that Bush, Rudy, Romney or McCain will make THE NEXT APPOINTMENT to the SC someone on the order of Scalia and upset the apple cart we have had for years.

"You're gonna get environmentalists determining our energy policy."

Nothing new about that. They've been running our energy policy for 20+ yrs. in the event you haven't noticed.

"You're gonna get a gutted military."

Another given already agreed upon that you evidentally missed.

"You're gonna get a retreat in the war on terror."

And apparently once again, you've been out-of-it and failed to notice those RINOs that marched up to the WH and told Bush they'll be voting to leave Iraq come Sept., long before the '08 election.

Now I've responded to all your nonsense and non-facts, but you still have not answered my question about WHY you and the other pseudo-conservatives find it necessary to trash Reagan. I suspect the other poster who answered me that you guys are all American-HATERS had the correct answer.

Bush, doing the job (wrecking the Republican party) Democrats only wish they could do.

Republicans. Throwing the baby out with the bath water. It seems cool and part of the in crowd thing now to bash Bush. Fact:Unchecked immigration has been around long before Bush. Fact:We voted these people in. Not Bush.

Perhaps President Bush knew this bill was destined for failure. Just a thought.

On Judges and taxcuts alone Bush has done far more good for the Conservative Movement's future then all the screaming lunatics on the radio, or penning columns

That's true enough, but only because Bush is in a position to act while the rest of us are not. The actions you cite are such elementary no-brainers that any "screaming lunatic" would have done the same. Praising Bush for these minimal actions is like giving a soldier a medal for showing up in the morning.

Not necessarily. We live in a Republic. We elect the guy or gal who we think fits us best but then he/she can vote however he/she sees fit. What you are describing is a democracy. Mob rule.

"...or we are through."

That's probably a fairly safe bet when people who are pretty good at reading the tea leaves say Hillary, 80% chance or better of being the next Pres.

Personally, I'm a lot more concerned about seeing the end of America than I am about watching the Republican party go the way of the Whigs. Might be a good idea to step back and look at the big picture instead of focusing on your party like the Democrats are want to do.

"Fact:We voted these people in. "

We certainly did vote for them. Too bad we didn't have the $ to buy them so they would represent us.
