Cloture fails, 50-45. Immigration bill pulled off floor by Sen. Reid. ... It can't really be about how many amendments Republicans get to offer. ... Alternative: Maybe it's about not being able to take the worst ideas from the left (instant legalization of illegals) and the right (second class guest workers), put them together, call it centrism, bask in fawning MSM coverage and ram it down the throat of voters who don't want it!

Ding Dong! the Witch is dead
Not by a long shot. While the president holds the power of executive order, he can do harm. He can declare a national emergency over immigration and with his newly penned powers— Congress won’t lift a finger to stop him, he’ll just declare them all citizens to prevent the riots McCain claims will happen.
We may never be safe from the harm the last three adminstrations have heaped upon this country.
Not quite yet. Keep the pressure up for a little longer.
> Congress wont lift a finger to stop him,<
So true, so sad.
Correction: Second-class guest workers are NOT an idea from the right, but from the RINO brain trust. It's an idea that is clearly against true Conservative principles. Second-class status is morally wrong, and socially disruptive. That's partly why Conservatives were so strongly against the Mexican Invasion Surrender Bill.
Dubya is not going to legalize all the invaders with an executive order.
Not a chance....
If Bush were to pull such a stunt and the republicans in congress did nothing, they can kiss the republican party good bye.
It is not dead yet. McConnell and Reid are already plotting another substitute amendment for the underlying bill.
I hope that’s not true. This bill will almost certainly destroy the Republican party. If it had passed I was going to call McConnel again just to say that his job is toast, enjoy it while you can. The Republican Party is not immortal, no political party is and if we have to start over, there’s a lot of work to be done.
And not only the power of executive order, but the power to appoint and empower scumbags like Johnny Sutton to help keep the borders wide open by giving Mexican drug smugglers immunity and throwing border patrol agents in jail.
First and foremost, Republicans must make it clear that it was Republicans who ultimately killed the bill. Reid is already out there distancing himself (and his party) from the bill and pointing his finger at Bush. That's fair enough, but Bush is a (very) lame duck anyway, so the public may not buy Harry's shenanigans.
Why doesn’t congress just declare war on Mexico, place our troops down on the border there and take over their oil wells, and resort towns and really start helping the Mexicans by running their gov’t for them!
You get an ‘A’
Cheers! for the defeat of this bill and all who sail her...
Is that plain old iced tea, or Long Island iced tea?
Like Rhett Butler, the "public" don't give a damn.
I'll bet only 1 in 10 even knows what's going on. But, hopefully, that's enough.
That’s a beer. I’m pretty sure it would be a non-alcoholic beer. It seems W has taken ill, hope he’s better tomorrow. He could use all our prayers.

Although I'm disgusted with his stand on illegal immigration, I'm not above praying for the man. He does need to be prayed for. He's got the hardest job in the world. He asked for it, but damn, it's a hard job. He's surrounded by pit vipers who want him to fail
