(Santa Fe, New Mexico-AP) Connecticut Senator Christopher Dodd will get his chance to show off his Spanish language skills.
Democratic presidential hopefuls New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and Dodd have agreed to participate in a candidate debate in September that's to be conducted in Spanish.
Univision Communications, the nation's largest Spanish-language broadcaster, has invited candidates to a debate planned September ninth at the University of Miami.
Richardson, who is fluent in Spanish, is the nation's only Hispanic governor. He was born in California, but spent his early childhood in Mexico City.
Dodd, also is fluent in Spanish. He lived in the Dominican Republic while serving in the Peace Corps.

Are they running for some office in Mexico?

In 1917, former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt said: We must have but one flag. We must also have but one language. That must be the language of the Declaration of Independence, of Washington's Farewell address, of Lincoln's Gettysburg speech and second inaugural. By contrast, in June 2000, U.S. president Bill Clinton said, I hope very much that I'm the last president in American history who can't speak Spanish. And in May 2001, President Bush celebrated Mexico's Cinco de Mayo national holiday by inaugurating the practice of broadcasting the weekly presidential radio address to the American people in both English and Spanish. In September 2003, one of the first debates among the Democratic Party's presidential candidates also took place in both English and Spanish. Despite the opposition of large majorities of Americans, Spanish is joining the language of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, the Roosevelts, and the Kennedys as the language of the United States. If this trend continues, the cultural division between Hispanics and Anglos could replace the racial division between blacks and whites as the most serious cleavage in U.S. society.Samuel P. I have to keep reminding myself he (Dodd) is one of the Senator’s from my state because he’s invisible here. Wish he was invisible everywhere.

In that red map — that’s a really impractical border.
I think that if they want to be entirely neutral, they should have a debate in Latin.

“Are they running for some office in Mexico?”
Could be. First they have to pass the corruption test: are they corrupt enough?

Democratic presidential hopefuls New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and Dodd have agreed to participate in a candidate debate in September.... Note, they aren't doing this next week, giving themselves a chance to brush up. More likely that they will be out of the race long before this edebate takes place.

So... Two guys who aren’t going to win are going to debate in a language that our laws and constitution aren’t written in.
Ok.

Maybe if they were read questions by a dozen or so excitable hot Latino women from various gameshows on Telemundo, I’d bother watching, although it might be entertaining to watch Dodd speak in Spanish (assuming his opponent is any better at that).
