WASHINGTON (AP) - A fragile bipartisan compromise that would legalize millions of unlawful immigrants suffered a setback Thursday when it failed a test vote in the Senate, leaving its prospects uncertain. Still, the measurea top priority for President Bush that's under attack from the right and leftwon a brief reprieve when Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he would give it more time before yanking the bill and moving on to other matters.
His decision set the stage for yet another procedural vote later Thursday that will measure lawmakers' appetite for a so-called "grand bargain" between liberals and conservatives on immigration.
If that fails, Reid threatened, "The bill's over with."

I can't wait for this preposterous bill to be finished.
It's an insult to my folks who had to jump through hoops to become U.S. Citizens
And if any of these maggots get to stay here, I demand that they be required to learn English pronto!!!!
I hope it’s dead.
The very idea of any of these mexicans doing anything swiftly if they are given any concessions on this matter is ridiculous. They are not in the business of trying to be Americans, they want America to be mexican. So look out.
Die you dastardly bill, die!
I have a feeling a couple of the more noxious provisions will get buried in some kind of omnibus monster. We will have to be vigilant until Bush is gone and Fred Thompson will be sitting in the Oval Office with a veto pen instead of a signing pen for any such nonsense.
No less than the fate of the United States is at stake.
It sickens me to hear the quotes Trent Lott throws out.
What a LOSER
My wife had to get a visa and it cost $3,000 with a doctor visit, a police check in her country, my tax records and a lot of waiting. No way illegals should be legalized. Build a fence and start sending them back, starting with work violators and criminals.
Missed closing the </u> tag.
Limbo is not good enough. It needs to be burned in the fires of hell.
Forget R.I.P.................I want the thing to R.I.H. (rot in hades)
THe fires of hell with be apparent and burning brightly in ‘08 when some of these senators (Yes, I took names.) try to get re=elected. And it will look good on them.
That’s why they did not pull this crap before the 06 election. They are hoping the anger will be gone by then. I don’t think it will, even if it dies the painful death it deserves.
This Bill was sabatoge because it became a political hot potato. Onced it was discovered to be unpopular it was poison on both side.
This POS said the same thing before the cloture vote so I don't believe him.
Even if this bill is shelved there will be other attempts (in the dark) to pass similar amnesty. We must remain vigilant.
“Die you dastardly bill, die!”
I’m hoping for a slow death...more time for more melt downs...I want to see Bush rant about his Political Capital...McCain talk about wages...
They'll probably attach it to the next troop-funding bill.
