Senator Bernie Sanders addressed the US Senate concerning the proposed Immigration Bill. I listened to his remarks on C-Span2. He was critical of the bill and pointed out the damage that has been done to America by the business interests which are pushing for the bill, and the damage that it will cause. He offered an amendment that will prohibit corporations from trying to import foreign labor, while at the same time firing Americans.
I've never heard Senator Sanders speak before. He was eloquent and brave. I hope that all Americans who are concerned about the immigration debacle will have the opportunity to hear or read what he said about this terrible legislation.
Unfortunately, I don't know how you can get a transcript, or hear his speech, perhaps someone here can tell us.
“In this one instance, Bernie’s innate socialism aligns him with the side of right — but this is definitely an object example of the “a busted clock is still right twice a day” rule.”
Our side needs all the help it can get.
oops, sorry
“Dont give Bernie too much praise, his screed was purely anti-business. As long as the man wont financially benefit from amnesty, hed be all for it.”
I think his remarks were pro-American.
“Gee what happens when you mix nationalism and socialism?
Did you know that the word Nazi is an abbreviation for National Socialist in German?
I agree with these specific comments on illegal immigration but dont underestimate for a minute how dangerous this mans ideology is for everything good in this world.”
Thanks.
Don’t underestimate the importance of balance, in all things.
“Im sick of all the amendments. I know that they are being used more for delaying tactics than anything, but I wish more Senators would just come out and say the whole thing is screwed and it needs to be thrown out completely.”
Me too, but that isn’t the way they work.
(I) believe that we must develop a path to citizenship for the 12 million illegal immigrants already in the United States.
Sanders is ONLY against the aspects of the bill that appear to him to aid American business.
Sanders is FOR amnesty i.e. the “path to citizenship” for illegal aliens.
In other words, Sanders has simply expressed the standard Democrat position on the issue. Sanders wants illegal aliens to become voters because that means the Democrats solidify and increase their gains.
“The label “socialist” is completely accurate. Bernie Sanders has stated repeatedly over the years that he won’t join the Democrat party because they’re too conservative. Look at his voting record before you praise him. He opposes the conservative position on every issue. He’s right for the first time in his life on this bill, but it’s for socialist, not patriotic, reasons.
I’m glad he’s against the bill, but it changes nothing about who and what he is.”
His remarks today addressed social issues in America. Guess he was the man of the hour.
“I have to disagree; that amendment sounds every bit as terrible as this legislation.
Bernie Sanders has two goals: 1, to regulate American businesses out of business; 2, to replace the void they once filled with government.
Obviously, this immigration bill is a bad one because illegal aliens should be treated as such. But the fact is, sometimes (legal) foreign workers in, say, Silicon Valley, serve a useful role. It sounds as though Sanders recognizes this role and wants to remove it, with the aim of accomplishing goal no. 1 so as to pave the way for goal no. 2.”
Senator Sanders’ amendment addresses preventing American businesses “outsourcing” American jobs, right here, on our own soil. They shouldn’t be allowed to fire Americans and import cheap labor to fill those jobs.
“A look at Socialist Bernie’s past record will dispel any notions of him being an ‘American patriot’.
He’s right on this issue, but wrong on a host of others.”
President Reagan signed an amnesty bill that opened the door to the flood. Shall we remove his halo?
Trotzky. He must have stepped on some toes, like Senator Sanders did today.
“The shocking and sad part is we are agreeing with Sanders and railing against Bush.”
That should make it clear that we are witnessing a struggle between capital and labor.
It is easier to have a warm feeling for an employer, for giving you a job, if you don’t see the anguish of the person you displaced. That anguish is being felt by too many Americans today.
“Id wager every nickel I have that any opposition that Comrade Bernie might have to this bill is based on its racist requirements that illegals must pay *any* back taxes and present any hard and fast *proof* that theyve been here for X number of months/years.”
If Senator Sanders’ opposition helps to kill this bill, then maybe you’ll have more than nickels to bet, next time.
“Bernie Sanders is a declared enemy of the American Constitution.”
Not today.
If Senator Sanders wants to vote against this abomination because he's a socialist, I'll hoist a beer in his name.
“The day Freepers start supporting demagogic anti-business Socialists is the the day I leave Free Republic.”
President Bush enjoyed overwhelming support here for years, but look at it now. The immigration issue before us is a matter of business versus labor.
Senator Sanders’ remarks today are alot closer to what working Americans are feeling than the things we’ve been hearing from President Bush.
