Republican Debate Spotlights
Human Events ^ | June 6, 2007 | Peter Schweizer & Wynton C. Hall

But the most electric energy in the debate hall was reserved by the man not on stage, Sen. Fred Thompson. In a bit of brilliant tactical maneuvering, Team Thompson scheduled their candidate to appear with Sean Hannity to offer post-debate analysis from the comfort of the Fox News studios. Not only did this in effect make Thompson a “participant” in the debate, it allowed him to contrast himself against the candidates and their responses without the strictures of time limits or spirited counterattacks from rival candidates. Better still for Thompson, his appearance...

and a cramped stage of candidates just one shy of a football team,

Why is everyone complaining about this? Wasn’t Fox News going to just have a few candidates and their was complaining big time. You can’t have it both ways!!!!!

I agree that the media seems to be trying to stave Romeny off. Pundits must agree that he is the most formidable opponent. Hence his swipe at the pundits was apt.

I was unhappy with the Bush bashing by the candidates. I think the republicans should stand united behind the President. It is unnecessary after all Bush isn’t running! Hindsight is always perfect isn’t it? Would any of these candidates have done better with the war effort?

Republicans = the stupid party.

In their stupidity, they have been sheltered from the worst consequences, because they could not see them, struggling to make the best of where they at, but without sufficient vision to break through to a place where the struggling could lead to a beneficial state of affairs. They are always grappling with evil, but never totally overcoming it.

It’s a tough one. They have to contrast themselves from an unpopular president but also still look loyal. Tricky sledding.

I’d like your input on this:

Pres. Bush tried to change social security (remember all the hub-bub over that?). He tried to say that his re-election was a “mandate” to do this, but the numbers just didn’t add up for him.

If Thompson is to a)win and b)change social security, do you think he would almost HAVE TO win the ‘08 election handily in order to push through social security reform?

It has been on my mind for some time that in order for conservative principles to regain their lost footing, a conservative candidate would have to win the general election in a Reagan v. Mondale way in order to seriously humble the Dems and the Drive-bys and have a chance to push through his legislative agenda.

Thoughts and comments welcome.

Social Security is and remains the so-called “third rail” in American politics. Touch it and you die.
I don’t think either side wants to touch it politically.
So much for courage!

Wolf must have received some questions from moveon. Some were obviously designed to open the door to Bush bashing.

Hunter almost completely ignored.

The better view was Fred on Fox afterwards..

Bingo! Fred got more air time by being on Fox News than any other candidate. Brilliant!

"I think the republicans should stand united behind the President."

That wins the "silliest comment of the day" award.

Do you think Bush could be re-elected?

Would he win the party nomination even?

To be a Bush-bot would be to assure yourself condemned to a small postscript asterisk in a history book no-one would ever read....*Once attempted to win republican nomination for president, polled less than 1% in every primary.

Sorry Sandra, many of us are disgusted and finished with "The President's" insinuations and deceptions. IMO he doesn't deserve the time of day, let alone one more iota of my money, effort, time, or moral support.

Would not matter.

As far as the dems are concerned, if a landslide happened, it just means the voters made a mistake, and its the partys job to correct it.
