I think these are the folks that want to be sure the party swings far enough left during the convention. They admitted on radio interviews today that they want face time on national media for their pet issues (health care, etc)

"Why would the Democrats want to alienate their allies? "Their allies" to the democrats is analogous to we strict-constructionist conservatives are to the republicans. We just express ourselves differently.
