When we say that we are a nation of immigrants too many overlook the fact that the pillars of a community seldom pull up stakes and go to other countries and start a new life. The misfits are the ones who do, for the most part. That may well help explain the individualism and creativity of America, but it also explains why our prisons are full and always have been.

The U.S. is not Australia, we were not founded as a penal colony. The first immigrants to America were people of courage and conviction. Some came here to avoid religious persecution, some came here as entrepreneurs to seek their fortune, some came just for the adventure. The poem now inscribed on the Statue of Liberty is just a socialist's dream. America was not founded nor built into the greatest nation in the world by poor, huddled masses, quite the opposite. The record already established by the illegal invaders from Mexico as far as learning English, working, government dependency, criminal activity and the lack of any effort to assimilate, show that they are not to be equated with those who founded and built this Great Country.

People of courage and conviction can also be misfits. Puritans and Pilgrims escaped religious percution and sought freedom because they were not conforming. Often, European inheritance laws produced landless second sons who sought their fortunes in the New World.
