Thomas dies
Wyoming residents are mourning the loss of Sen. Craig Thomas (R) this morning. Thomas, who just started his third term in the U.S. Senate this January, died last night after a long battle with leukemia. Gov. Dave Freudenthal, a Democrat will name a Republican replacement from a list of three candidates submitted by the Wyoming Republican party in a matter of days.

Thompson Ahead in California
In a poll that will surely make many Republicans happy, SurveyUSA reports in its latest survey that Fred Thompson has surged into 2nd place amongst GOP voters in California. Thompson is tied with Sen. John McCain at 21 percent, with Rudy Giuliani in first place with 28 percent. Meanwhile, according to this report, key Bush surrogates are starting to back Thompson for president. We’re not sure if this is good or bad news.

Reagan Remembered
Finally, it should be noted that it was three years ago today that we lost Ronald Reagan. We remember his strength, vision and what good he did for this nation.

Gas Average today: $3.148

A Democrat Governor will appoint a Republican replacement? This is the ultimate blasphemy among Democrats. Not that I am disappointed, but this do seem odd.

Fred Thompson has surged into 2nd place amongst GOP voters in California. Thompson is tied with Sen. John McCain...

It's weird how R voters repeatedly turn to Hollywood actors (Reagan, Ahnuld, and Thompson) for leadership of their declining party while at the same time pretending to reject Hollywood values.

Here is a good list of things Fred did BEFORE he was an actor. Unlike Reagan, Fred became an actor after he was involved in politics.

Thompson was admitted to the State Bar of Tennessee in 1967 and worked as an assistant U.S. attorney from 1969 to 1972. He was the campaign manager for Republican U.S. Senator Howard Baker's successful re-election campaign in 1972, which led to a close personal friendship with Baker. He later served as co-chief counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee in its investigation of the Watergate scandal, (1973–1974). He was responsible for Baker asking one of the questions that is said to have led directly to the downfall of President Richard Nixon—"What did the President know, and when did he know it?"[citation needed] Also, Thompson's voice has become immortalized in recordings of the Watergate proceedings, with him asking the key question, "Mr. Butterfield, are you aware of the installation of any listening devices in the Oval Office of the President?"[9] In 1977, Thompson took on a Tennessee Parole Board case that ultimately toppled Tennessee Governor Democrat Ray Blanton from power on charges of selling pardons.

Did you know that Senator Thompson got his start in acting because he was asked to play himself?

The 1977 Ray Blanton-Tennessee Parole Board scandal later became the subject of a 1983 book, Marie, by Peter Maas. Director Roger Donaldson bought the film rights and travelled to Nashville to speak with the people involved with the original case. After meeting with Thompson, Donaldson asked Thompson if he wanted to play himself in the movie; Thompson agreed. The resulting film, Marie, was released in 1985.

I love how some folks never mention that Fred was an attorney and politician long BEFORE he was an actor....

There are some Dems left with some sense of honor... just not in the national party. Appointments for "the other side" were not uncommon just a generation ago. If the people elected a (D or R), those making a new appointment would simply assume that they people still wanted a (D or R), and made an appropriate choice of a decent candidate from that party.

Today, national-level politicians have no room for such "niceties" anymore. They act like CEO's and/or lawyers (which is what 98% of them are), where no concession can ever be made, and even a fractional increase is desirable, no matter the propriety of the situation.

A Democrat Governor will appoint a Republican replacement?

It's my understanding that Wyoming state law prohibits him from appointing someone from a different party.

It’s even weirder how liberal Democrat voters are too stupid to see why.

It is my understanding (and backed up by a “news” story) that the Dem. WY Gov gets to “choose” between three candidates (Republican) selected by the WY Senate. This seems a very fair way of doing this.
