President Abbas asks Congress help to release PNA funds withheld by Israel

GAZA, Palestine, June 4, 2007 (IPC + Agencies) - - The President Mahmoud Abbas met Senator Joseph Lieberman, a member of the U.S. Senate, yesterday in the Presidential Headquarter in Ramallah.

Dr. Saeb Erakat, Chief of the negotiation Department in the PLO, described the meeting as positive, pointing out that the meeting dealt with efforts with the Israeli side to revive the peace process and the implementation of President Bush's vision of a two-state solution.

Erekat stressed that Abbas asked the help of the American Congress to release of Palestinian funds withheld by the Israelis, pointing out that the Minister of Finance Dr. Salam Fayyad, participated in the meeting and briefed the guest a detailed explanation about the tragic situation in the Palestinian territories because of the embargo and restrictions on the bank transfers to the Palestinian National Authority.

Erakat said that President Abbas assured to the guest that there is a Palestinian security plan to confront security problems in the Palestinian territories, pointing out that this plan is the need of Palestinian internal, to restore security in the Palestinian society, and preserve the status of the Palestinian question in the world. He added that the President asked the American Congress to reconsider stopping the American support for infrastructure projects, pointing out that Senator promised to examine such a request.

He explained that President Abbas thanked the American Congress on the approval of assistance to the Palestinian crossings. He noted "the embargo threatens everything that the international community has done to revive the peace process in the region". Erakat said that the meeting chatted about the themes of the wall, settlements, Israeli checkpoints and the continuous Israeli incursions of the Palestinian territories.

U.S. Senator Lieberman said that the situation in the region as a whole serious and disturbing, and expressed his hope that the calm and security replace violence.

Lieberman promised to transfer the difficult situation image of the Palestinian people to the American Congress in order to support the Palestinian people, for a better future of the peace process.
