Continue To Urge Support Of Tiahrt Amendment |
Friday, June 01, 2007 |
For more than five years, cities suing the gun industry and anti-gun organizations have sought access to confidential law enforcement data on firearm traces records that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) compiles when it traces firearms in response to requests from law enforcement agencies. Every year since 2003, the U.S. Congress has passed increasingly strong language to keep this information confidential. The legislationa series of "riders" to the appropriations bill that funds BATFEis widely known as the "Tiahrt Amendment," after its sponsor, Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.). This critically important legislation protects the privacy rights of law-abiding gun owners, the safety of law enforcement officers, and the integrity of criminal investigations by preventing inappropriate release of confidential firearm trace data except in the course of a bona fide criminal investigation. On April 30, Michael Sullivan, acting director of the BATFE, had this to say (www.scrippsnews.com/node/22041), "ATF considers this information law-enforcement-sensitive because it is often the first investigative lead in a case. We treat it no differently than fingerprint matches and other crime-scene information, since disclosure outside of law enforcement can tip off criminals to the investigation, compromise cases and endanger the lives of undercover officers, witnesses and confidential sources." Please continue to contact your U.S. Representative in support of the Tiahrt Amendment, and remind him or her that NRA and law enforcement remain united in support of this critical legislation. And please be sure to urge your family, friends, and fellow firearm owners to do the same! You may contact your U.S. Representative at (202) 225-3121. Bloomberg Cast as Enemy No. 1 of Gun Rights
"The mayors gun coalition lobbied successfully to keep the Tiahrt Amendment from becoming law, rather than an annual attachment, last year and has been pressuring Congress this year to kill the provision. Mr. Bloombergs criminal justice coordinator, John Feinblatt, is in Washington every week, lobbying representatives and talking strategy with allies. The mayors also opened a Web site, www.protectpolice.org and created a 30-second television advertisement that has been broadcast in Washington and in the districts of members of Congress involved in the appropriations process."
Bang
If Bloomberg’s against it, I’m all for it! ‘Course I think we should just dismantle BATFE(ces) in the first place, but this is a good start!
Man, it hurts to bad to have to agree with the BATF on something.
OK.
In what way do you agree with ATF?
Am I misreading this or is the BATF on the side with the NRA that this info should not be given to cities who are trying to sue the gun industry?
It’s even worse that we have to fund them in order to get this to pass.
I've read through this a couple of times and still aren't sure what to make of it. The FOP leadership have supported 2-A infringements in the past. And ATF? Hmmmm......

Author unknown.
Registration leads to confiscation.
There's not a cop within a hundred miles of where I live (northern California) that I'd trust to preserve and protect the 2nd ammendment. Pledges- hardly worth the effort to expel breath.
