How about “Homeland Defense Rifle?” By the way, “AR-15 type” was my insertion, not the authors. As a shooter, I tend to stick to technical definitions, rather than evocative wordings like “black rifle.”

I certainly wouldn't be writing "black rifle." I'll think about political speech and get back to you. My nit picking on that could have something to do with having been issued one of the rare rifles with "AR-15" on it for one of two phases of Army initial training (three months OSUT for my kind). Come to think of it, it's doubtful that any of those are being issued now, though. There were very few back then.
