The way the pundits reported it this past week, youd have thought the imminent entrance of former senator and Law & Order star Fred Dalton Thompson into the Republican presidential sweepstakes represented manna from heaven for conservatives. But from what I can tell, in Orange County at least where there are probably more conservative Republicans per capita than most other places in the country that wing of the GOP is not breathing a collective sigh of relief. First of all, Thompson gave a less than stellar performance last month when he was in Newport Beach for a Lincoln Club event. Not good, particularly given that club members are the ones able to pony up the big bucks Thompson will need if hes going to compete in a field that already has 10 candidates.

“Rudy will be the man to steer a strong course without betraying our ideals. “
Rudy doesn’t share any conservative ideals to betray.
“If you sell out your republic to crown a king...then you are finished.”
Like you crown Rudy?
“How disingenuous. This is designed to dampen the enthusiasm and momentum to get someone decent into the WH who is very conservative.”
Never forget: All liberals lie all the time.
If they appear to say something that’s not a lie, it’s only because they know that a lie succeeds best when she baits her hook with a bit of truth.
BINGO!
IMAGINE...if the primary VOTERS aka citizens.....were actually responsible for choosing the candidate...
Not interested in a King.
Funny you should mention that- just read somewhere this weekend that McClintock is really liking Fred...
I thought these big time business people were supposed to keep up with things. It looks like they need to be spoon fed their info. Fred has addressed many of these concerns but I guess he didn’t make it simple enough for a bunch of blue blood country club types.
“Orange County representing conservatives across the U.S.?
How disingenuous. This is designed to dampen the enthusiasm and momentum to get someone decent into the WH who is very conservative.”
Hardly any of your suggestions. Merely a political reporter for a major paper, giving a survey of meeting participants.
The Orange County Register is an old, libertarian paper. Its editors can probably explain Milton Friedman and Thomas Sowell. (In fact this paper probably can say many good things about Ron Paul.)
The Lincoln Club is where Fred Thompson decided to go first. Therefore I conclude he was interested in input from OC, as it might reflect others across the land.
It is a news article, not an editorial page item. The “news” was Fred didn’t make a big splash.
The figures cited in the article are Republicans discussing Republican candidates.
The political types favor Giuliani or Romney, while the big money businessmen favor McCain. Dana Rohrabacher is undecided, as am I.

It seems that conservatives are about to make the same mistake that they made in 2000. Every Cassandra warned the movement conservatives that GW Bush was a liberal, but they were all duped by his "compassionate conservatism," which we since have learned really means "liberal globalism."
Now, despite all the warnings, they are about to be conned by Fred Thompson too - another neocon (aka liberal globalist). Will they get what they deserve? Can people really be so shortsighted? In 2011 will we hear GOP cheerleaders, "If only I had known...
Let's look at Fred Thompson on the issues.
First and foremost, let's ponder immigration, the greatest threat facing the West today. As Jean Raspail foretold in Camp of the Saints, the "best conservative novel ever written," a third-world invasion of the West is taking place, and we must make a stand - before it is too late.
Although tough talking on border control, Fred Thompson has a rather weak record from his time in the Senate. Americans for Better Immigration only gave him a career grade of C. And on chain migration, visa lotteries, reducing unnecessary visas, asylum fraud, and reducing amnesties, he received rather low marks. 1
Thompson is almost certainly pro-abortion, regardless what he feigns. He has said, "The ultimate decision must be made by the woman." In other words, he believes it's a "choice."
Thompson is pro-affirmative action, and his two votes in the Senate guaranteed that under-qualified minorities would be given preference over Euro-Americans (i.e. white people). Thompson obviously believes that victimology should trump hard work.
And like all neocons, Thompson supports free trade, which is destroying our economy and undermining our sovereignty. Historically, conservatives opposed free trade, and they should; it's national suicide. But Thompson like many GOP cheerleaders has been "neoconned" on this issue.
In foreign policy, Fred Thompson is an adamant neocon globalist. He is a fellow at the neocon American Enterprise Institute, and a member of the neocon / neoliberal Council on Foreign Relations, which supports the creation of a North American Union and the eradication of American sovereignty. 2
In short, Fred Thompson is no real conservative. He's a neocon globalist. Only look at his past actions, memberships and words.
We already have three real conservatives in the running (Tom Tancredo, Ron Paul, and Duncan Hunter) and let's give them the support they deserve. If Fred Thompson receives the nomination, I'm voting Constitution Party. 3

ping—this came to me from someone in NH. What do you make of it?
“I hope I don’t get in trouble for posting this—but it just came to me by email. Does anyone have any knowledge about what is said here, the writer, or the publication?”
“From Magic City Morning Star Guest Column Fred Thompson: Liberal in Disguise By Basil Harrington Apr 20, 2007 - 8:29:44 AM”
It looks like Basil, sending Basil something written by Basil, then posting it as if it came to him by Email. What did I miss, Basil?
No need to defend garbage.
I just found it funny that people would seriously consider California, any part of it, a gauge of anything “conservative”.
“This I know. They are looking for someone that can WIN.”
Then they may as well give their money to Rudy. According to many opinions, he is the only one who can win.
I guess I am being too naive. Expecting a man who could actually win running on firm principles and a strong vision. Instead we end up with someone who can be more popular than Hillary Clinton! Is there anyone in the republican party more likable than her?
A lot of the problems Bush has faced stem from the fact that Clinton tried to run his administration from the White House and only used the agencies for patronage. He couldn't work with Congress, either. So, fortunately, his only accomplishment was the Family and Medical Leave Act. Charisma alone just doesn't cut it. Neither does ideology. We need someone who can actually do the job.
You won’t get in trouble with me.
Here’s what I think about Basil Harrington and his ilk- the far right and the far left are very close to meeting each other at the back of the circle.
Basil Harrington supports Ron Paul. That tells me all I need to know.
but the libertarian Cato organization seems pleased with the idea of Fred Thompson as President.
I've noticed that too and it is scaring the heck out of me.
That will be a plus for Fred, not a minus. I live in Orange County. Bren and Argyros are not conservatives, but are New Majority types despised by Orange County conservatives for the silk-sock country club Big Tent GOP party-above-principle RINOs they are. So of course they like McCain.
>So what the h-— is wrong with Dunccan Hunter? Too liberal? Throw some of their money behind him, he is the best conservative candidate running! Or isn’t Hunter too easy to “control”? just wondering what they are looking for.<
I think you’ve put your finger on it, upsdriver. I know Duncan Hunter is NOT a patsy. He is a consistent conservative, meaning that he does not go where the wind blows. God’s speed, Duncan Hunter!
I posted it, truthseeker. The Basil/basil thing is just a coinky-dink. The friend who emailed this to me is deadly serious about it, and what I’m looking for is some ammo against this, so I can hit here with it.
OC conservative Congressman John Campbell, R- Newport Beach, and state Senate Republican Leader Dick Ackerman, R-Irvine, are on Romney's team. Mitt also leads in fundraising in San Diego County.
I would still appreciate it if anyone has anything concrete to refute this stuff, though. I'd like to know if it was made up of whole cloth--or did Fred at one time support some of this, and has since changed his mind about it and moved on
