Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani played Mr. Smith when he came to Washington today to push President Clinton's $33 billion crime package. He won rave reviews from Democrats, a polite nod from House Republican leaders, but harsh public jeers from several New York Republicans for his pleas to both parties to drop their partisan bickering for the benefit of the nation's cities.

Several New York Republican members said they were still angry over his trip to Minneapolis on Friday with President Clinton criticizing the House action, and they warned that his standing in the party had suffered lasting damage. But it was equally clear that Mr. Giuliani had won vital allies in a city still primarily controlled by Democrats.
In meetings with Republican House members and at news conferences around Capitol Hill, Mr. Giuliani encouraged the notion that he was free from party discipline and was seeking to break political molds.

Throughout the day, Mr. Giuliani actively promoted a provision in the crime bill providing millions of dollars to cities to sponsor midnight basketball leagues, which has become a lightning rod for Republican opponents who say the bill is full of pork.
And while appearing with advocates for strong gun control, Mr. Giuliani endorsed the Clinton Administration's position not to compromise on a provision to ban 19 types of assault rifles in an effort to pass the legislation.

In New York today, the Mayor was soundly denounced by Guy V. Molinari, the Republican Borough President of Staten Island and one of his closest political allies.
Mr. Molinari said he was angered that Mr. Giuliani and the Police Commissioner, William J. Bratton, had implied that opponents of the bill, including his daughter, Susan, were motivated more by partisan politics than a desire to help the city.

Fiscal conservatives generally don't lobby to spend millions on midnight basketball. He may have cut some taxes in NYC, but he pushed a lot of spending on the state and federal level.
March 27th, 2007And this asshat was a US Attorney? He doesn't even know the Bil of Rights.
During Sean Hannitys March 23 radio show, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani fielded phone calls from listeners. One caller asked Giuliani to clarify his stance on gun control, to which he replied, "I support the First Amendment right to carry and bear arms."(clip from YouTube at link too)
UNFIT to be POTUS - period!
(btw, 'carry' and 'bear' are the same thing Rooty)
He's left out the "keep" part of "right to keep and bear arms" several times -- I'm starting to wonder if that's a deliberate weasel-word thing. He has also repeatedly asserted that the Constitution gives us rights, and sometimes even argues that we have no rights not listed in the Constitution. He would be President Nifong.
Sorry, I don’t have the exact quote handy but its out there.
In an interview with Wolf Blitzer, Giuliani was adamant about his support of licenses for handguns. Giuliani said, “The idea that we should have a uniform law, a uniform set of requirements, much like we do for driving an automobile. So that right now we don’t have that. So that if people have a handgun, they can display like people have to drive automobile, that they are able to use the handgun, that they can take a written test, pass a test in terms of character and fitness..I have been in support of that since 1980-1981 when I first started testifying about it before the Senate.Meanwhile, Bush does not even favor licenses for handguns.” [CNN Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer, 2/6/00

And the ONLY reason the ban on semi auto rifles passed was the PORK. Mucho money to the states for hiring “more police”.
This is the same way that travesty the 1968 Gun Control bill became law, lots of pork to cities for crime control! One city actually received $150.!
