Palestinian Gunmen Broke Through Israel’s Heavily Fortified Gaza Border
RTTNews (excerpt) ^ | June 9, 2007

Posted on 06/09/2007 12:55:28 PM PDT by HAL9000

6/9/2007 3:40:21 PM On Saturday, Palestinian gunmen broke through Israel’s heavily fortified Gaza border and battled troops inside Israel for about two hours in a failed attempt to abduct an Israeli soldier. One of the raiders was killed. It was the first cross-border incursion since militants killed two soldiers and abducted a third a year ago.

The Israel military said troops shot dead one of the raiders. Palestinians said another three militants escaped back to Gaza unharmed.

The Islamic Jihad group said it carried out Saturday’s attack, near the Kissufim crossing between Gaza and Israel, along with the Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, a violent offshoot of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement.

Multi-National Division – Center PAO

AZ ZAIDON, IRAQ – Apache attack helicopters engaged and destroyed an improvised explosive device emplacement team near Az Zaidon, Iraq, southwest of Baghdad, June 7.

The IED emplacement team was observed preparing a site, emplacing, and covering the IED by an unmanned aerial vehicle at about 10:30 a.m.

The UAV, controlled by the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, continued surveillance of the team until AH-64 Apache attack helicopters from the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade arrived at the scene.

As the sedan was moving away from the IED site, the Apaches engaged the sedan with a rocket, killing the two occupants and destroying the vehicle.

The Az Zaidon area is known as a safe haven for al Qaeda and as a step-off point for launching attacks into Baghdad.

Release A070609a

One secret cell terrorist killed, three detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Forces killed one terrorist and detained three suspected terrorists during operations targeting secret cell network operations in Baghdad.

The individuals detained during the raid are believed to be members of the secret cell terrorist network known for facilitating the transport of weapons and explosively formed penetrators, or EFPs, from Iran to Iraq, as well as bringing militants from Iraq to Iran for terrorist training.

As Coalition Forces moved to the targeted building, two terrorists on the roof drew their weapons to engage the ground force. Coalition Forces, responding in self-defense, engaged the armed terrorists, wounding them. One terrorist died while the ground force was administering medical aid, and the other was taken to a military medical facility for treatment.

Coalition Forces detained two more suspected terrorists at the scene. Both detainees and the wounded terrorist tested positive for explosives residue, and the ground force found 12 million Iraqi dinar on the individuals.

Intelligence reports indicate the terrorist killed was a mid-level facilitator for the secret cell terrorist network.

“We will kill or capture terrorists where they hide,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesperson. “Denying terrorists safe haven in Iraq is a key step towards providing Iraq and its people the opportunity for a secure and stable future.”

Israeli forces foil kidnapping attempt by Islamic Jihad
“The gunmen were traveling in a jeep marked ‘TV’.”

“IDF foils kidnapping attempt, Islamic Jihad gunman killed,” from the Jerusalem Post:

The IDF foiled an attempt to kidnap a soldier on Saturday afternoon.
Four Islamic Jihad gunmen infiltrated Israeli territory from the Kissufim border crossing between Israel and the central Gaza Strip and attacked IDF troops stationed in the area.

The gunmen were traveling in a jeep marked ‘TV’, in an attempt to camouflage their true intentions.

One terrorist was killed in the ensuing gun fight, while three others managed to flee the scene. No IDF troops or Israeli civilians were wounded in the attack. The IDF was searching Israel’s side of the border to ensure that no terrorists remained in the area. According to the IDF, the early detection of the terrorist squad helped prevent a catastrophe.

Abu Ahmed, a spokesman for Islamic Jihad, told local radio stations that four members of the terrorist group broke through the Gaza border fence and were clashing with soldiers.

“It is difficult to storm (the area). But when they entered in a surprise, they confused the enemy,” he said.

Palestinian security officials confirmed that four militants were clashing with IDF soldiers.

Five Islamic militants arrested in Singapore
Sunday, June 10, 2007

SINGAPORE: Singapore has arrested five suspected Islamic militants under tough security laws allowing detention without trial, the government said. Four of the five arrested between November and April are alleged members of Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), blamed for the 2002 Bali bombings in Indonesia among other attacks, the home ministry said.

Ishak Mohamed Noohu, one of those detained, is a senior member of JI’s Singapore wing and has undergone militant training in the Philippines, it added in a statement late Friday. He was also involved in several plans by JI to attack foreign targets in Singapore as well as a plot to hijack a plane and crash it into Changi Airport, the statement added.

Another detainee, law lecturer Abdul Basheer Abdul Kader, was a “self-radicalised” militant who planned to pursue jihad in Afghanistan. Such cases are “a troubling new phenomenon today of individuals who are self-radicalised, independent of direct recruitment by established terrorist groups,” said the ministry. All five are held under Singapore’s Internal Security Act, which allows for detention without trial.

First call to prayers at the largest mosque in New England
Saturday, June 9, 2007

BOSTON -- Thousands of worshippers gathered in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood Saturday to celebrate as construction workers lowered a bronze cap on the minaret of the largest mosque in New England. Some Muslim women and men had tears streaming down their faces and others raised their hands in prayers as a large copper cap was hoisted by crane to the top of the structure -- symbolizing the near completion of construction after years of legal wrangling.

The muezzin -- a man appointed to call Muslims to prayer -- broadcast a symbolic call that drew at least 2,000 people to pray on the grounds of the Islamic Society of Boston's mosque.

June 9, 2007 Poll and new report show frustration of young Muslims in the U.S.
June 9, 2007

A show of sympathy for suicide bombers among some young, American Muslims has raised new concerns about homegrown extremism, but also is highlighting calls to engage the nation's growing Muslim population. A Pew Research Center poll released late last month found that, while U.S. Muslims are largely the picture of assimilation, about a quarter of Muslims ages 18 to 29 said the use of suicide bombing against civilian targets to defend Islam could be justified, at least on rare occasions.

The finding was described by some as a trouble spot, and even a hair-raising statistic, but many Muslim scholars had another reaction to the Pew report: What did you expect?

"Given what's happened in Iraq and Palestine, I would be shocked if there wasn't discontent," said Omid Safi, professor of Islamic studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Is al-Qaeda going nuclear?
June 10, 2007

HP police arrest eight Kashmiri militants from Kangra region for possessing uranium

The police, with inputs from the Intelligence Bureau, arrested the militants with 1.5 kg of uranium on Thursday. Besides a native of Himachal Pradesh, one person, an engineer, is from Delhi and one from Kolkatta.

According to the Nurpur DSP Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi, interrogation is in progress. According to sources, the al-Qaeda has been making inroads and establishing camps in Jammu and Kashmir, a move vehemently denied by the government.

Sources believe that the al-Qaeda could be trying to make a nuclear bomb and getting uranium from Indian bases. The organisation had declared a jihad against India in a recently released video in Srinagar, which the authorities were still examining, according to sources.

HP Director General of police Ashwani Kumar said the material recovered was not uranium. The police said the material recovered was copper coins. According to sources no tests were conducted as the Himachal police was awaiting the arrival of experts of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).

The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board recently denied that a separate 700 grams material seized from four carriers by the police from Lucknow on June 1 was uranium. AERB Secretary Om Pal Singh said this week said the Board had sent two experts to Lucknow with necessary instruments and they found prima facie that it was not the fissionable material.

The material was yet to be tested by the BARC here to determine its chemical composition, Dr Singh said. According to sources, the AERB played down the seizure not to raise an international alarm. According to sources, US intelligence sleuths were actively monitoring the situation.

Al-Qaida's new African alliance watched
June 10, 2007

WASHINGTON - U.S. counterterrorism officials are paying renewed attention to an increasingly dangerous incubator for extremism: a swath of northern and sub-Saharan West Africa, from the Atlantic coast of Morocco and Mauritania to the harsh deserts of Chad.

The centerpiece of terrorism problems in the region is Algeria's Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, better known by its French initials GSPC. Late last year, it joined forces with Osama bin Laden and renamed itself al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, an Arabic term used to refer to North Africa.

"The threat from al-Qaida's presence in the region is significant, very dangerous and potentially growing in a couple of cases," Assistant Secretary of State David Welch told the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday.

In interviews, senior government officials go even further as they talk about recent developments in the impoverished region of North Africa, the Sahara, and the grasslands to the south known as the Sahel. The vast area has the potential to become more volatile, said three senior officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of their positions.

One senior U.S. intelligence official said the new al-Qaida-focused GSPC is more dangerous than its predecessor because its links to bin Laden boosted morale and its new focus on government buildings and suicide attacks is a shift in targeting.

"We should be worried about it. It hasn't really blossomed yet," the official said.
