“Women pledge to army of Islamic vigilantes”
By Philip Smucker
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
June 27, 2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “ISLAMABAD, Pakistan A 6,000-strong army of young women wielding bamboo sticks and covered from head to toe in black is vowing to enforce the Islamist moral vision of their teacher, Abdul Rashid Ghazi.
For now, they are content to kidnap prostitutes releasing them hours later after stern lectures on Islamic morality and attack music video stalls and other targets.
But Mr. Ghazi, who runs a madrassa, or Muslim seminary, attached to Islamabad’s Red Mosque, warns that his female students will send suicide bombers into the fray if authorities lay a hand on them.
“It is [President Pervez] Musharraf and [President] Bush who have created these suicide bombers,” said Mr. Ghazi, a polite and erudite Islamic scholar who is about 50 years old. “I mean, the more you try to suppress them, the more they appear.”
Several female seminarians who surrounded Mr. Ghazi during a recent visit to the school’s Internet cafe hissed loudly when a reporter tried to photograph them.”

FBI Asks for Publics Assistance to Identify Sender of Threatening Letters
The FBI and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service are asking for the public’s help in identifying the person or persons responsible for mailing dozens of unusual, threatening letters pertaining to the television coverage of collegiate football and basketball cheerleaders. The letters were sent to various national networks and their local affiliates, as well as to various individuals in Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, and throughout the Midwest. Multiple individuals associated with University Athletic Departments in Ohio, Michigan, and Arizona were amongst those receiving these letters.
Some of the letters contained various powder substances, which the FBI Laboratory determined was a potentially harmful insecticide. No one has been hurt to date. The initial batch of letters arrived in September 2004 with postmarks from Portland, Oregon; subsequent batches of letters were delivered between November 2006 and February 2007, primarily with postmarks from Seattle, Washington, but some also from Chicago, Illinois.
The FBI is releasing the following portions of two letters in the hopes that the public can help provide information as to the identity of the author:
“We are fed up with networks exploiting women in sports coverage. ABC/ESPN exploit collegiate and professional cheer squads in their coverage of football and basketball. They also screw WNBA players and WTA Tennis players. Compare coverage of cheer and dance squads based on their outfits they wear. Compare quality of shots, length of shots and number of shots Pigs park their cameras on us close up, front view, dozens of times each game, yet rarely ever show on TV in this manner, unless squads are wearing sweaters, jackets, under shirts, etc... Watch how they always zoom in on WNBA players shooting free throws then leave at the last second as she starts to shoot, disrupting the flow. Watch on ESPN how they will show women serve, close up, from every angle (side, back) EXCEPT when they zoom in close front, they will leave as she starts to serve, disrupting the flow. We have asked nicely for them to respect us and all women, yet they refuse. They exploit innocent people, so we will too. When they start respecting us, we stop mailing these out.” (excerpt from September 2004 letter)
“For the past 6-7 years, ESPN and its nationwide networks have exploited cheer/dance teams all across the country. They do this by parking their TV cameras on these women for their own personal entertainment, but only give TV time to squads that wear long sleeved shirts, jackets, sweaters, etc. The squads that don’t wear these types of outfits? They get EXPLOITED. For a long time we have warned ESPN the networks and several schools what would happen if this did not change. For the last 6 years, Ohio State cheerleaders have received more TV time than any other Division 1A cheer squad on ESPN, because they wear long sleeved red/white outfits. If they wore sleeveless outfits, they would not get ANY TV time. So, we are fed up with this constant exploitation.” (excerpt from December 2006 letter)
These excerpts illustrate the unique nature of the author’s grievance, the level of energy the author has devoted to this issue, and specific language used by the author. Members of the public may have come into contact with the author either in person or through some other forum, such as Internet postings. The FBI believes that the author may be directly or indirectly involved in some element of cheerleading and/or the television production/coverage aspect of collegiate athletics.
A $5,000 reward is being offered to anyone with information leading to the identification of the individual(s) responsible for sending these letters. Anyone with information pertaining to this matter is asked to contact their local FBI office or, nationally, toll free at (866)915-8299.

“Court Denies En Banc Review in Millenium Bomber Case”
By KENNETH OFGANG, Staff Writer
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, over the dissent of six of its judges, has denied the governments request to review a ruling that could result in a lesser sentence for Ahmed Ressam, convicted of plotting to detonate explosives at Los Angeles International Airport while Americans celebrated the dawning of the 21st Century.
Ressam, dubbed the Millennium Bomber, is serving a 22-year sentence imposed by a federal judge in Seattle after he was convicted of international terrorism, placing explosives in proximity to the ferry terminal, possessing false identification, using a fictitious name, falsely identifying himself on a customs declaration form, the smuggling of and transportation of explosives, the illegal possession of a destructive device, and carrying an explosive during the commission of a felony.
But a Ninth Circuit panel ruled in January that the conviction on the last count should be thrown out because the prosecution failed to prove a relationship between Ressams possession of explosives and the underlying felony, which was lying on a customs declaration. Under 18 U.S.C. Sec. 844(h)(2), the crime carries a mandatory 10-year sentence, in addition to the penalty imposed for the underlying offense.
Ressam was arrested after crossing into Washington state from Canada by ferry. A suspicious customs inspector initiated an intensive search of his vehicle, which revealed enough explosives, prosecutors said, to have killed hundreds of people had they detonated at LAX during the holiday travel period.”

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. Bill Barnes says he was scratching off a losing $2 lottery ticket inside a gas station when he felt a hand slip into his front-left pants pocket, where he had $300 in cash. He immediately grabbed the person’s wrist with his left hand and started throwing punches with his right, landing six or seven blows before a store manager intervened. “I guess he thought I was an easy mark,” Barnes, 72, told The Grand Rapids Press for a story Tuesday. .....

TERRORISM FOCUS
“Forum Users Improve Electronic Jihad Technology”
By Abdul Hameed Bakier
(June 26, 2007)
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A previous issue of Terrorism Focus exposed a jihadi website dedicated solely to cyber attacks against websites deemed anti-Islamic (Terrorism Focus, October 3, 2006). The members of http://al-jinan.org have targeted websites critical of Islam and Islamic rituals. They have labeled themselves electronic jihadis and believe that they are engaging in an online form of the jihad. The website distributes a program called Electronic Jihad that assists in overwhelming the servers of certain websites, thereby taking the websites offline, at least temporarily.
To encourage more participation in cyber attacks, the website recently offered more information on their objectives. One section redefines the electronic jihad by saying, “The electronic jihad is the method and the means to inflict maximum human, financial and morale damage on the enemy by using the internet.” The website reiterates the importance of organizing synchronized mass attacks on anti-Islamic websites and calls on fellow jihadis to sign up for the list of targets and to study the techniques and programs used in electronic jihad.
Unlike the first campaign of electronic jihad where participants did not have prior knowledge of the websites that they were attacking until they activated the Electronic Jihad software, the updated main page of al-jinan.org carries domain names of websites to be targeted in coming cyber attacks. Also, the Electronic Jihad software program 1.5 (silver version) has been updated to version 2.0. The new version of the software is easier to use than the old version because, after a few seconds of activation, it updates the targets automatically and is compatible with different internet connection speeds and capable of using different proxies to override government website blocking technology. The new version of Electronic Jihad sets up an account name and password with al-jinan.org for every user. The account registers the number of hours the user spends attacking targets and every two weeks to a month the names of those who scored the highest are posted. Currently, the highest score is claimed by a user nicknamed “George Bush” who spent 4,211.50 hours, or 70 full days, hacking anti-Islamic websites. Other users spent hundreds of hours running the program.”

Bolton: Military intervention only option to stop Iran; ‘very worried’ about well-being of Israel...
The Jerusalem Post ^ | 6/27/2007 | DAVID HOROVITZ
Posted on 06/27/2007 4:15:24 AM PDT by PreciousLiberty
Sanctions and diplomacy have failed and it may be too late for internal opposition to oust the Islamist regime, leaving only military intervention to stop Iran’s drive to nuclear weapons, the US’s former ambassador to the UN, John Bolton, told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday.
Worse still, according to Ambassador Bolton, the Bush administration does not recognize the urgency of the hour and that the options are now limited to only the possibility of regime change from within or a last-resort military intervention, and it is still clinging to the dangerous and misguided belief that sanctions can be effective.
As a consequence, Bolton said he was “very worried” about the well-being of Israel. If he were in Israel’s predicament, he said, “I’d be pushing the US very hard. I am pushing the US [administration] very hard, from the outside, in Washington.”

This turn of events has my interest peaked. The most serious weak link in the Iranian economy is that they import 40% of their gasoline. Reports are that this rationing came about without warning. Iranian justification was pending attacks by the US.
Now, this combined with their recent activity in Gaza, Lebanon and now possibly southern Iraq, makes me think that they may be on the verge of instigating something while they perceive that the US is unable to respond preemptively and further enlarge their controls of the region, providing a buffer for their nuclear program.
Yeppers... the interesting times have gotten more interesting, recently.
