As far as I know, it’s wheat gluten contaminated by melamine, originating in China. My concern is that the Chinese make their own rules. If they choose to manufacture foodstuffs in an unsafe fashion, they are free to do so. Once it gets into the system over here, it’s very difficult to keep consumers safe.

Bingo! Wasn’t this additive supposed to increase the protien content of food products? Now that all food products must be labeled as to their nutritional content, manufacturers are juggling those numbers like crazy! Low fat typically means low flavor, so they add sugar. Process another way and you loose protien. (protien tends to spoil) Add melamine, and voila, a low cost high-protien tasty treat!. Who knew? Isn’t snake venom mostly protien, too? Where was the FDA on melamine as a food additive?
