Toothpaste Containing Poison Is Found in U.S.
The New York Times ^ | June 2, 2007 | WALT BOGDANICH

Consumers were advised on Friday to discard all toothpaste made in China after federal health officials said they found Chinese-made toothpaste containing a poison related to a chemical used in antifreeze in three locations — Miami, the Port of Los Angeles and Puerto Rico. Although there are no reports of anyone being harmed by the toothpaste, the Food and Drug Administration warned that the Chinese products have a “low but meaningful risk of toxicity and injury” to children and people with kidney or liver disease.

The United States is the seventh country to find tainted Chinese toothpaste within its borders in recent weeks. F.D.A. officials said they found toothpaste containing a small amount of diethylene glycol, a sweet syrupy poison, at a Dollar Plus retail store in Miami, sold under the brand name ShiR Fresh Mint Flouride Paste. The F.D.A. also identified another nine brands of Chinese toothpaste that contain diethylene glycol, some with concentrations of between 3 percent and 4 percent.

There is no “NAFTA” deal with China. There isn’t anything even remotely resembling a NAFTA deal with China. Be serious.

And the ChiComs are an important trade partner. Sorry about your kids and pets....

That only proves how very shrewd Bush is. Once your children are killed off by poisoned Chinese products, he will just invite in millions of illegal aliens to take their place and then some. See? He has thought of everything! Bush is shrewd and we are (finish the rhyme).

“What, keeping the Chinese market open to us, while having them give us a great excuse to close ours to them? Sounds great.”

Yeah, and a few dead pets and kids... what the heck, profit is profit, right?

It’s brilliant. Much like a thread concerning tainted consumer products can become a discussion of illegal immigration, if you can pull it off.

*** There is no “NAFTA” deal with China. ***

I’ll venture a guess and say the poster meant MFN status.

It’s difficult to construct trade deals with a country that artificially values and devalues it’s currency to suit it’s own purposes.

It would be nice if there were a store that stocked “American-made only” products. I try to buy American when I can, but sometimes it seems like everything is made in China.

I figured they would find it in a dollar store. The one near me has all sorts of weird toiletries from China with misspelled words on them.

Proctor & Gamble, baby, for the win! Just one of the largest toothpaste manufacturers, if not the largest, on the face of the planet! American, I'll remind you . . . since you've forgotten.

No, but domestic manufacturing would have helped a lot.
You’re going to cling to the free trade as your ship just breaks up and goes to the bottom. Great to see you’re a total ideologue.

Which isn't even a trade deal.

But we've long since passed the point where having a clue is a requirement for posting on important issues.

Which goes a long way toward explaining why we don’t have a trade deal with China. Perhaps you could explain that to the other poster?

“Hey free traders... this is what you wanted.”

This has nothing to do with ‘free trade.’

I guess you’d like to return to the days of Smoot-Hawley?

That sure worked out real well.
