However, now I do not feel alone. Peggy Noonan has a new column up in the Wall Street Journal Opinion Journal. She has clearly said what has been getting me down. I think I knew what was up, but couldn't put a finger on it. I knew it centered around the immigration debate, and the way our congressional leaders are behaving. That sentiment especially includes Mr. Bush too, but when I read this column, I felt like Charlie Brown yelling at Lucy at her Psychology booth when he yells, "That's it!" when trying to identify why he can't get into the Christmas spirit.

The White House doesn't need its traditional supporters anymore, because its problems are way beyond being solved by the base. And the people in the administration don't even much like the base. Desperate straits have left them liberated, and they are acting out their disdain. Leading Democrats often think their base is slightly mad but at least their heart is in the right place. This White House thinks its base is stupid and that its heart is in the wrong place.
For almost three years, arguably longer, conservative Bush supporters have felt like sufferers of battered wife syndrome. You don't like endless gushing spending, the kind that assumes a high and unstoppable affluence will always exist, and the tax receipts will always flow in? Too bad! You don't like expanding governmental authority and power? Too bad. You think the war was wrong or is wrong? Too bad.
But on immigration it has changed from "Too bad" to "You're bad."
The president has taken to suggesting that opponents of his immigration bill are unpatriotic--they "don't want to do what's right for America." His ally Sen. Lindsey Graham has said,

Those are YOUR words. Proof YOU can’t stand anything good about the man.
It’s good to admire the President, his administration and his family for anything decent or good or just plain fun, in face of the left wing destroyers of a man and his presidency. Now add destroyers on the Right. Issues are just that, issues, and are all over everywhere else here, as you well know.
There, destructive rhetoric, ugly rhetoric, profane and X rated sexual innuendo rhetoric, demeaning rhetoric, gutter rhetoric and all the rest are ruling the day.
But you can’t stand a thread that is different and protected from that. Pathetic. Pitiable. Sick. Twisted.
Too bad this contact with you can’t be washed off in the shower. But it can be ended. Have the last sick word against me, it’ll be like taking candy from a baby since I’m not answering. It’ll be even easier than beating down a PResident who is already beaten to a bloodly pulp. Even easier than beating a dead horse.
Big man. /sar
BS. I believed the in man. Now, I feel personally betrayed by him.
Go ahead and worship him. That's not Conservatism. That's idolatry.
Conservatism requires critical thinking, not emotional response. Unfortunately, Bush has been saying things that would drive any Republican nuts if the same words came from Clinton.
Well, I'm not some mindless groupie. If he can't pass the smell test, he can't. And, as of late, he can't.
Who were we at war with in 1998? Or in 1868? As far as I know, that was the only two times that a President was actually impeached.
Can one be a Patriot without being a US citizen?
Do you think you can win the argument when you tell me that I am not a US citizen and hence according to you that I am not a Patriot? My love for the greatest country is as great as any Patriotic US citizen.
Shame on you, your hate is blinding your heart, your mind, and your soul.
Amen. So much hate against the President in this time of war, so much hate. I see no difference between the left wing lunatics and some on our side in their extreme hate toward President Bush.
I would take a non citizen that is willing to fight and die for this country over all the cowardly “citizens” that avoid military sevice.
It makes you wonder how many were actually on our side to begin with.
I know a lot of freepers who are against the President position on the illegal immigration bill but they still support the man very strongly and they will never degenerate the Commander in Chief in times of war.
However, I agree with you. No one who was really on the President and our side can now hate him so much, call him a traitor and shout for his impeachment. They can claim all what they want about voting from him twice, campaigning for him, etc... but these lies cannot fool us.
I simply asked a question..
I don't like the tone you're using on other Freepers...Freepers who, like myself, are thoroughly disappointed with our country's leadership direction.
It is simply not possible to deport most much less all illegal aliens. Allowing them to stay is the only reasonable solution.
The President did not call anyone unpatriotic, it is dishonest (and frankly liberal-like) of you haters to continually suggest he did.
You know America was founded with the “We can’t do it” attitude.
Not so. We can intern them first, like we did to the Japanese-Americans (who were citizens and did not deserve this treatment.) Then deport them several thousand at a time. Day by day, week by week.
It should take about ten years.
12 million....1.2 million a year...100,000 a month.
Meanwhile, do not let anymore in.
And in the meantime, CLOSE THE DAMN SOUTHERN BORDER!!!
Any attempt at massive deportation will result in civil war, the crash of the U.S. economy, and our defeat in the war on international Islam. No thanks.
Say what you want out in the open....as you seem very capable of doing.
YOU are the one throwing the HATE word around.....Not me!
What part of "I'm disappointed and hurt by what the President has done" translates into hate for you?
Oh never mind....I don't even care to know.
I just know I'm tired of you trouncing on the many here who are hurting ...just as I am...
..and twisting their words.
Some folks, yes, are so disillusioned and feel so betrayed they are using stronger words.
Would it hurt you to cut them some slack?
Can you wrap your brain around the idea that those who are using the strongest words toward our President may be the very ones who trusted him the most....who gave till it hurt....who volunteered and supported and protected and defended....yes, and who even fought in his war/wars....
Nothing YOU can say will negate their loyalty, patriotism or respect and love for this country!
Please lady, please... You asked a question to exactly question my Patriotism because you and few others have been using the issue "that I am not a citizen yet" as someone who has no right to debate the illegal immigration issue and go against the main thinking on this forum regarding this issue. You guys were all hysteric and falsely and deliberately accused the President that he questioned your Patriotism when he never said anything like that and now you are telling me that you are not questioning my Patriotism when you asked me directly "Can an non-US citizen be a Patriot". That was not a simple question, the intent was very clear in this case.
I mentioned this yesterday to another freeper for the first time on this forum and I will mention it again to you and to anyone else who is intrested in knowing: In late 2005 I went to an Army recruiting center in Boston to join the Army as an Arabic translator. Unfortunately I could not join because even for Arabic translator in the army they need to go through 9 weeks of Basic Combat Training which I will certainly not pass because of a medical condition I have. I wanted to leave a very comfortable engineering job with an excellent salary and bonus to join the Army and serve this greatest country in history of the world, the U.S.A, to whom I am in eternal debt that I can never repay.
